In 2007, he was appointed by the Governor of Ohio to the position of Assistant Director of the 4,000 employee Ohio Department of Public Safety, where he provided oversight for the day to day operations of eight agency divisions, including the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Ohio Emergency Management Agency and Ohio Homeland Security.
