Art, access, and independence came together at the Santa Cruz Art League this month! 🎨

Vista Center clients recently visited the SC Art League to experience the 95th Annual Statewide California Landscape Exhibition, featuring artists’ interpretations of California’s coastlines, mountains, deserts, foothills, and more.

After a presentation and Q&A with gallery staff, our group explored the exhibition in ways that worked for each individual - through the guided experience and with smart glasses, apps, apps, and other assistive devices. Some of the tools our clients used are technologies they’ve learned to use through education and training at Vista Center, putting those skills to practice in a community setting.

That’s what access and independence can look like: having the tools, training, and choice to engage with the world in ways that worked for you.

Thank you to the SC Art League for welcoming our community and helping make the arts more accessible!

We’re proud to share that Vista Center has been selected as a recipient of an AI Glasses Impact Grant from Meta, as part of Meta’s national initiative to provide Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to every eligible blind veteran in America.
Meta launched this initiative to honor the service of America’s blind veterans, with more than 130,000 legally blind U.S. veterans expected to be eligible. Through the program, veterans can receive Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses at no cost, along with access to training and support to help them use the technology in their everyday lives.
We’re honored to be one of the organizations selected to help bring this initiative to veterans in our community. Through our grant, Vista Center will help qualifying veterans access this innovative technology and provide the personalized training and support that are central to our work.
Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses can use AI to assist with everyday tasks such as reading text, identifying objects, answering questions, and accessing information through voice commands. Meta’s initiative recognizes that technology is most meaningful when people also have the knowledge and support to use it confidently.
We’re incredibly grateful to Meta for this investment in blind veterans and for recognizing the role organizations like Vista Center can play in connecting people with innovative technology.
This news is especially meaningful as we prepare for White Cane Awareness Day on October 8. Join us from 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. outside Palo Alto City Hall as we celebrate what the white cane represents, raise awareness about vision loss, and honor veterans and all individuals who are blind or have low vision in our community.
No registration is required—we hope to see you there!

It was a total Puppy Palooza at last week’s Resource Spotlight session! 🐾

Five amazing local puppy raisers brought 7 adorable guide dogs in training to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the journey from puppy to guide dog.

We’re so grateful to these dedicated puppy raisers for the time, love, and patience they give to help prepare these incredible dogs to support greater independence for people who are blind or visually impaired. 💙

And honestly…we were just thrilled to have this much puppy cuteness in one room!

Thank you to the Santa Cruz chapter of puppy raisers for Guide Dogs for the Blind and all of our wonderful guests for making it such a special afternoon! 🦮
