Date: Feb. 24, 2022

Dear fellow Salukis:
Due to the conditions caused by the winter storm, Southern Illinois University Carbondale will be closed Thursday, February 24. This is an administrative closure. All classes (face to face, hybrid and online) will be canceled and will not be delivered remotely. Residence halls, residential dining and the Rec Center will remain open as will the Department of Public Safety. All other campus buildings and offices will be closed.

Essential personnel should report to work, but no other employee should report to work during the closure. Employees who have questions should consult their supervisors.
At this time, the university is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Friday, February 25. The university will continue to monitor the weather forecast and road conditions, and provide updates on campus operations as necessary.

Please note the following:
-For real-time weather updates, visit weather.gov.
-Residential dining centers will be open 11am - 8pm
-The Rec Center will be open from noon-7pm.
Tonight's basketball game will be held as scheduled. Visit siusalukis.com for options to watch or listen to the game.

Grounds workers will be clearing sidewalks, steps and parking lots as weather conditions permit. Avoid unnecessary travel and please use extreme caution as you move about campus.

SIU Carbondale on-campus, in-person classes beginning at 4pm or later today, Wednesday February 23, are canceled due to anticipated weather conditions. If the course is online, it will continue as planned. Morris Library, the Student Center and the Student Recreation Center will remain open. Tonight’s game will be held as scheduled. Visit siusalukis.com for options to watch or listen to the game. Employees should report to work as scheduled or contact their supervisors.

At this time, the classes will resume at 8 a.m. on Thursday February 24. The Carbondale Police Department is investig*ting a shooting that occurred in the 300 block of East Hester Street off campus just before 10 p.m. on August 30, 2019. The victim, not affiliated, received non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is alleged to have driven away in an unknown vehicle. No additional suspect information is available at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the City of Carbondale Police Department at (618) 457-3200.
