Meet Cheryl Johnson Co-Founder and Executive Director of Agape Faith & Outreach, Inc.

If there is one thing I want people to know about me, it’s that this ministry is not about me, our board, or any one person. This is God’s work, and we are simply honored to be His hands and feet in our community.
For years, God has placed a burden on my heart to serve others, love people where they are, and help meet needs in practical ways while sharing the hope found in Christ. Agape Faith & Outreach was born from that calling. Our mission is simple: Meet. Love. Serve.
As Executive Director, I have the privilege of helping guide our organization, but every food box delivered, every family helped, every child blessed, and every act of kindness is a testimony to God’s provision and the generosity of those He sends alongside us.
I am grateful for our incredible board members, volunteers, donors, and community partners who make this ministry possible. Together, we are working to be the hands and feet of Jesus and to remind people that they are seen, valued, and loved.

As Scripture reminds us, “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to Your name be the glory.” — Psalm 115:1

Meet Carla Wayland-White Agape, Faith & Outreach Co-Founder and Assistant Director

I’m excited and blessed to be a part of Agape. My husband Dru and I have been married for 26 years and we have a beautiful daughter, Taya. Carroll County has been our home our entire lives.

I grew up in a family that believed in helping others and expecting nothing in return, whether it be a meal, a ride, or a few dollars. We were taught to treat others with respect and kindness, to treat others how you want to be treated because you never know if you’re entertaining an angel.

The heart of a servant was instilled in me at an early age. Growing up I witnessed my church family pray, love, give, and respect without judgment. From a young age I always worried about if people had food. Everyone wants decent clothes to wear. Everyone deserves basic necessities such as running water, clothes, shoes, a meal, heat to stay warm in the winter and to be cool in the summer. These thoughts were present the evening Cheryl Johnson gave me a call, asked if I was busy and if I wanted to help her do something. That evening we delivered coats, gloves and food. Cheryl also arranged for wood to be delivered to this family. That evening Cheryl and I discovered we both had a deep desire to help others in our community. We prayed that if it was God’s will for Agape to come forth he would make it happen. We prayed that God would give us a compassionate, like-minded board with servant’s hearts.

Cheryl and I grew up in a neighborhood that others looked down on. That neighborhood showed us love, compassion and trust. It showed us what it’s truly like to be raised by a village and love your neighbor as you love yourself.

Pray with us that God continues to bless Agape to do his will by having the heart of a servant.

Meet Madison Baumler - Agape Faith & Outreach Student Liaison

I’m honored to serve as the Student Liaison for AGAPE Faith & Outreach

Carrollton has been home most of my life, and as I begin my senior year of high school, I’ve found myself thinking more about the community I’ve grown up in and the people who have helped shape who I am. This year will bring a lot of changes as I finish high school and prepare for college, where I hope to pursue engineering.

My faith has been an important part of my life growing up. I was baptized when I was 12, and over the years I’ve had opportunities to become more involved in my church, including speaking in front of the congregation a few times. Those experiences have challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and think more deeply about what I believe and what it means to actually live out my faith. To me, faith isn’t only about what happens inside a church. It’s also about how we treat people when we leave it. That is one of the things that makes AGAPE meaningful to me. There are students and families in our community facing struggles that we may know nothing about. Sometimes people need financial or physical help, but sometimes they simply need someone who will listen to them, encourage them, include them, or remind them that they matter.

As Student Liaison, I hope to help AGAPE better understand the needs and perspectives of young people in our community. I also want students to know that AGAPE is a place where they and their families can turn for support without feeling embarrassed or judged. I hope my involvement can also encourage other young people to serve. You don’t have to have a lot of money, have all the answers, or wait until you’re older to make a difference. We can serve through our time, our words, our kindness, and simply by paying attention to the people around us.

Being part of AGAPE gives me an opportunity to grow in my own faith while putting it into action. I’m thankful to serve alongside people who genuinely care about our community, and I’m excited to see how God uses AGAPE to bring people together, meet needs, and remind others that they are seen, valued, and loved.

Meet Diana Swearingin Smith

I’m honored to be on the board and serve as treasurer for Agape, Faith & Outreach!

I have lived in Carrollton my entire life. I was blessed to be raised in a wonderful, loving Christian home. I have always felt that my calling is to give back to others and help people through difficult times. My mom helped instill this in me. My mom has always been a great example of serving others. Growing up she was always making a pan of brownies or a hamburger casserole to take to someone sick, recovering from surgery or going through a challenging time. I saw how these meaningful gestures helped brighten someone’s day, just knowing they were cared about and loved.
I am also the proud mom to three amazing kids- Clara, Connor and Cate. I have been through challenges in life just like everyone. Clara was born at 23 weeks and spent over 3 months in the NICU. During that time this wonderful community surrounded us with love, financial support, and prayers. I’ll never forget receiving one check from someone I barely knew. They wrote in the card that they felt God had blessed them financially in order to give to others when it was needed. That has always stuck with me!
I know that everyone faces challenges in life. Many times these are not seen from the outside. Mental illness, overwhelming grief and extreme physical pain are a few challenges I’ve seen impact people that i love. That’s why I believe it’s so important not to judge someone’s circumstances or their need for help. Sometimes, they simply need someone to show up!
Not everyone has been blessed with the gift of a Christian home and knowing the love of Christ like I have. That’s what sets Agape apart from many other organizations. We all feel that we are doing God‘s work, not our own. I hope that we are not just meeting a physical need but also sharing God‘s love and reminding people that they are seen, valued, and cared for.
I’m so honored to be a part of this organization and have the opportunity to serve the Carrollton community that I love!

Meet Barbie Baumler

Veteran Liaison, AGAPE Faith & Outreach

I’m honored to serve as the Veteran Liaison for AGAPE Faith & Outreach and to be part of an organization committed to loving people, meeting needs, and strengthening our community.

Carrollton is home for me, and service has been a meaningful part of my life in many different forms. I’m a U.S. Army veteran, and my years in the military taught me a great deal about service, resilience, teamwork, and the importance of having people beside you when life gets difficult. Since leaving the military, I’ve continued serving others through my work, my family, and my involvement in our community.

Serving as AGAPE’s Veteran Liaison is especially meaningful to me because I understand that veterans and their families can face challenges that aren’t always visible to the people around them. Just as importantly, many veterans don’t know about the resources, benefits, organizations, and people who are ready to help them. Sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.

I want AGAPE to be one of those places where veterans know they can start.

My own life hasn’t always followed the path I expected. There have been seasons of change, challenges, uncertainty, and starting over. Through those experiences, my faith has reminded me that God can use every season of our lives. Sometimes He calls us to serve others, and sometimes we have to be willing to let others serve us.

That is part of what I love about AGAPE. We aren’t here to judge someone by the situation they are facing. We are here to see the person, listen to their story, help where we can, pray with them, connect them with resources, and remind them that they matter.

My faith has taught me that loving people is more than something we say—it requires action. Sometimes that means meeting a physical need. Sometimes it means helping someone navigate resources. Sometimes it means listening, praying, encouraging, or simply being present when someone needs to know they aren’t alone.

As Veteran Liaison, I hope to help bridge the gap between our local veterans and the support available to them while also making sure they know AGAPE is a place where they are welcomed, respected, and valued.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside people who genuinely care about Carroll County, and I’m excited to see where God leads AGAPE Faith & Outreach.

For me, the heart of AGAPE is simple: love people where they are, serve without judgment, and trust God with what comes next.

Meet Taya White- Agape Faith & Outreach Marketing & Communications

I’m honored to serve on the Agape Faith & Outreach board

Although Carrollton is the place I’ve called home all my life, my adulthood has so far been spent better understanding and immersing myself in what this town has to offer.

I’m a rather introspective person, so I’m always reevaluating what my faith and spirituality truly mean to me. Everyone is here for a reason. Certain people are placed in your life for a reason. Not every experience is going to lead you to a grand epiphany, but you’re always going to come out of a situation with something. My experience in Agape is teaching me more about the importance of building and maintaining community. No one is truly alone. Help is out there, pain is temporary and although the path to a better situation is often nonlinear, there’s always a light at the end. On the other side of that, it’s important to make yourself available to others. Make sure people know you’re a safe and reliable person to turn to in their time of need. It’s not your role to pass judgement when it’s time to listen.

My favorite thing about being a part of Agape is helping my mother’s dream come to life. I remember so many talks where she would voice her desire to help people. I was so proud to hear she and Cheryl were working to get Agape off the ground. I’m truly honored to be doing this along her side. She and Cheryl couldn’t have assembled a better team to be a part of this special project.

Meet Cecily Sullivan

Vice President, AGAPE Faith & Outreach

I’m honored to serve as Vice President of AGAPE Faith & Outreach and to be part of an organization dedicated to loving and serving people in our community.

I grew up in Chillicothe, Missouri, and have called Carrollton home for the past nine years. I’ve worked as a cosmetologist at Hair I Do for 11 years, and through my work, church, family, and community involvement, Carrollton has truly become home.

I married my high school sweet heart, Keaton, 8 years ago and we have two children, Camden and Evelyn. Camden would have turned 11 this past June, and Evelyn will soon be six. After losing Camden, I experienced firsthand the incredible way people can come together to love and support a family during an unimaginable time. That experience planted a deep desire in me to give that same love back to others.

My faith has always been a part of my life, but in September 2025, I made the decision to truly commit to my faith again—not just attending church when it was convenient, but becoming involved in small groups and building a deeper relationship with Christ. I recommitted my life to Christ in January 2026, and since then, I’ve been able to look back and see how God was working in my life all along.

Through studying His Word, I’ve been learning about mercy, perseverance, hope, compassion, and what it truly means to love people through our actions. AGAPE has become one of the ways I get to live those lessons out.

Serving our community has opened my heart to giving, trusting that God will provide, and simply showing up for people. I want every person who comes to AGAPE to know they are seen, heard, and loved. We may not always have the answers, but we can listen, pray, care, and trust that God will lead us.

One of the greatest parts of this mission has been being able to teach Evelyn what it means to love and serve others. I want her to grow up understanding that we don’t just talk about loving people—we show them through our time, our kindness, and our willingness to help.

Raising money in honor of Camden’s birthday and giving over $5,000 to AGAPE, then spending time shopping for children who needed back-to-school clothes and shoes, reminded me that while I no longer get to do those things for Camden, his life can still change lives.

For me, that is the heart of AGAPE: loving people without judgment, meeting needs, reminding people they matter, and pointing them toward hope. I’m grateful to be part of a mission that allows me to serve my community while teaching my daughter—and myself—what it truly means to love others well.

Meet Shea Johnson
President, AGAPE Faith and Outreach

I’m honored to serve as the Board President of AGAPE Faith and Outreach. I’m an Arkansas native, but Missouri became home after I married my husband, Hunter Johnson, who first introduced me to Carrollton years ago. While I now live in Kansas City, Carroll County has become a meaningful part of my life through Hunter, the relationships I’ve built, and years of involvement in the community. My involvement with AGAPE began when Cheryl Johnson asked me to join her in prayer over the organization and what God was going to do through it. I’m grateful that what started with prayer has grown into an opportunity to serve a community I’ve come to love.

I’ve always had a heart for people and a passion for serving others. I’ve been blessed to serve on multiple international mission trips, and I currently work in nonprofit healthcare. I believe some of the most meaningful ways we can love others are simply by showing up, meeting people where they are, and reminding them they are seen and valued.

My faith has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was baptized at seven and have been blessed by experiences in many faith communities. Today, the Episcopal Church is where I call home. Through it all, my love for Jesus and the peace I find in His presence have remained constant. Prayer gives me comfort and direction, reminding me that I don’t have to know the way forward because He does.

One of the passages that continually inspires and grounds me is Psalm 119:89–90:

“Your word, Lord, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens.
Your faithfulness continues through all generations;
you established the earth, and it endures.”

God’s Word remains, His faithfulness remains, and His love remains.
