Never forget your "why".......why we do what we do.

On this day in 2003, the Station Nightclub fire occurred in West Warwick, Rhode Island, killing 100 people and injuring 230. Pyrotechnics from the band on stage, Great White, ignited nearby walls and ceilings and the fire spread rapidly. The blaze reached flash-over within one minute. Immediately, more than two-thirds of the 400-plus individuals in attendance turned and started for the main entrance. But the intensity of the flames and smoke caused the crowd to panic and surge forward, everyone pushing for the front door. Individuals fell, causing others to fall and, in less than 90 seconds, the front door was completely blocked.

Because of the building's age and size, many believed the Station to be exempt from sprinkler system requirements. In fact, the building had undergone an occupancy change when it was converted from a restaurant to a nightclub. This change dissolved its exemption from the law, a fact that West Warwick fire inspectors never noticed. On the night in question, the Station was legally required to have a sprinkler system but did not. However, a fire sprinkler system may have contained the fire long enough to give everyone time to exit safely.

In addition to the club being overcapacity, numerous violations of existing codes contributed to the calamity, triggering an immediate effort to strengthen fire code protections. Within weeks of the disaster, changes to the code for "assembly occupancies” were issued for the national standard "Life Safety Code.” This required automatic fire sprinklers in all nightclubs and similar locations with 100 or more occupants, plus additional crowd manager personnel, and additional exit requirements for new nightclub occupancies, among other things.

Always remember our fire history to protect our future.

On this day in 1946 a fire broke out in the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia killing 119 people. It was one of the deadliest hotel fires in the United States.

The fire started in the 15-story building early in the morning and engulfed all the floors of the hotel. People were caught unaware and were trapped in the upper floors. Many people jumped out of windows, dying upon impact. The only route for people to escape was a single stairway.

The fire spread throughout the building via the single stairway. Atlanta firefighters could reach only up to the eighth floor with ladders, and the nets they had spread could not hold many who jumped into them as holding capacity was limited to jumps from up to 70 feet.

The tragedy was compounded by flammable furnishings and finishes, a lack of fire escapes, a lack of fire doors, an absence of an automatic sprinkler system, and an open center core stairway. This tragedy, along with the La Salle Hotel fire led to President Harry S Truman convening a national conference on fire prevention. Additionally, fire codes were strengthened.

New York City Fire Department (FDNY)

"This is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in a quarter of a century. It will rank as one of the worst losses in a fire in many years. Based on the information now, I’m sorry to report twelve New Yorkers are dead, including one child. Four people are critically injured, fighting for their lives, and there are other serious injuries as well. Because of FDNY’s quick response, at least 12 people were rescued,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio regarding tonight’s fatal 5-alarm fire in the Bronx. FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said, “In a Department that’s certainly no stranger to tragedy, we’re shocked at this loss. The fire started on the first floor and quickly spread upstairs. People died on various floors, they range in ages from 1 to over 50. This tragedy is, without question, historic in its magnitude. Our hearts go out to every family who lost a loved one here and everyone fighting for their lives.” The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It's been a rough night in the Bronx. Prayers for the families and crews.
