French drains provide an easy channel for water to flow through. Water runs into a gravel-filled trench, then into perforated pipe at the bottom of the trench.

Water travels freely through the pipe, which empties a safe distance from the house.

The trench bottom should be sloped about 1 inch for every 8 feet in the direction you want water to flow. Depending on your situation, the water can be diverted to:

A low-lying area of your property
A drainage ditch
A dry well
The street

One of our customers called in wanting to enlarge her current drainage system in her backyard so we replaced her 4” corrugated pipes with 6”. Our guys also replaced one of the drop inlets, added a down spout gutter system that runs across the back of the house and ties both downspouts into the new drain pipes, constructed a new pervious patio in the back yard, and to complete the project installed new sod.

Last week was a busy week for the Rainstorm Crew! The week was spent finishing up the cleaning of 4 large sand filters. Our crew dug and replaced the lines coming from the sand filters with solid SDR pipe. They then installed a clean out straight up for each one and angled the pipes at a 45 degree angle up into the vegetative swale per engineered specifications. The project also included installing waddles to prevent sediment build up and installing a check damn/wall at the base to slow water into the rock pool. To finish it out they dug out all the rip rap and muck and replaced with clean rip rap. Great job RS crew!

When harvesting rainwater, for every inch it rains on a 1,000 square foot roof, you can collect 600 gallons of water. This means that if you put a rainwater harvesting tank under the downspout of that 1,000 square foot roof, you could collect > 6,000 gallons of water with 10 inches of rain! That's a lot!

We get a lot of calls about installing French Drain Systems. Not sure if you need one? Take a look at the article below:

03/12/2019

In urban and developed areas, impervious surfaces such as pavement and roofs prevent precipitation from naturally soaking into the ground. Instead, water runs rapidly into storm drains, sewer systems and drainage ditches and can cause flooding, erosion, turbidity (or muddiness), storm and sanitary sewer system overflow, and infrastructure damage. However, storm water design and “green infrastructure” capture and reuse storm water to maintain or restore natural hydrologies.

Great Video by New Hanover County, City of Wilmington, and Heal our Waterways. We recently did all of these installs for them and it was a great project for Rainstorm Solutions and our Team members!

Do you live in Hewletts or Bradley Creek? Did you know you're probably eligible for a FREE rain garden? The Heal Our Waterways rain garden install program was created to put more and more rain gardens in the back yards of communities that back up to Hewletts and Bradley Creeks so we can more effectively (and cumulatively) catch stormwater runoff before it reaches our tidal creeks. One of our our Crews helping out the community, Surfrider, and Heal Our Waterways with the installation of a Rain Garden. Great job guys!

What happens when a small community of like minded people spend a Saturday morning learning how to use their yard to slow stormwater run off and filter pollutants before they reach our waterways? The start of a Rain Garden Revolution!

Thanks so much Dawn & Bob York for hosting us for a morning of learning and discussion about rain gardens led by Dru Harrison Director of New Hanover County Soil & Water.

Another big thank you for the continued support of Mike Heath, Rain Storm Solutions, for donating the design, excavation, and mulch for our workshop!

Earlier this summer, one of our larger customers asked us to replace 300 linear feet of 48 inch pipe under a road in Ocean Isle. Rainstorm stepped up to the task and made it happen. We had to close the road during construction and work around all types of utilities that were in close proximity and even laying on the pipes we were replacing. We replaced the old plastic pipes with ACF's HP Storm pipe which is designed to work with less coverage then normal pipes. We were faced with many obstacles during this installation but the team pulled together and made it happen.

Sometimes we branch out, as was this case we were asked by Townes at Marketplace HOA to remove their current vegetation in their common area beds and replace with red brick chips. We removed all the grassy vegetation, installed weed control fabric and then install over 75 tons of brick chips. This will save on mulching every year and is an excellent weed control product. And it looks great and will continue to do so for years to come.
