Washington state has strong laws that protect residents from housing discrimination, but the current federal administration seems to have a problem with that.

We’re suing the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for threatening to withhold funding from state and local fair housing enforcement agencies for abiding by state laws.

“This is a blatantly unlawful attempt by HUD to force our state to walk away from making sure people have a fair shake at securing a place to live,” AG Brown said.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit yesterday largely upheld a lower court order blocking the Trump administration’s illegal effort to categorically freeze trillions of dollars in essential federal funding to states.

The court upheld a preliminary injunction that has been in place for over a year preventing the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from illegally withholding public dollars and services approved by Congress.

“I’m glad the court agrees that this unprecedented attempt to freeze federal assistance for Washington was illegal,” Brown said. “We’ve filed over 50 cases against the administration since this one, but my message remains the same: Follow the damn law.”

BREAKING: The Washington State Senate just gave final approval of SB 5892 to ensure that confidential information like drivers’ license numbers, social security numbers, and full birth dates are protected from unlawful attempts by federal officials to access our state's voter database. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Marcus Riccelli (D-Spokane), clarifies that the Secretary of State is the only agency allowed to respond to requests for sensitive voter information contained in the database.
