What is ASTM E84?

ASTM E84, also known as the "Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials," is a widely recognized test method used to evaluate the surface burning characteristics of various building materials when exposed to a controlled fire. This test measures the flame spread and smoke development of a material, providing valuable information about its fire performance.

Here's an overview of how ASTM E84 works:

Test Setup: The test is typically conducted in a horizontal tunnel-like chamber called the "Steiner tunnel." The specimen of the material being tested is mounted on the ceiling of the tunnel.

Ignition: A small flame is applied to the exposed surface of the material specimen.

Measurement: During the test, various parameters are measured, including the time it takes for the flame to spread along the surface (flame spread index or FSI) and the amount of smoke generated (smoke developed index or SDI). These measurements are critical in assessing the fire safety characteristics of the material.

Results: The FSI and SDI values are reported as numerical ratings. The lower the FSI and SDI values, the better the material's performance in terms of fire resistance. Materials with lower FSI and SDI ratings are considered to have better surface burning characteristics.

The ASTM E84 test is often used to determine if materials meet specific fire performance requirements and building code regulations. The results of this test can help architects, builders, and regulatory authorities make informed decisions about the use of materials in various building applications to enhance fire safety.

For example, materials that achieve low FSI and SDI values are typically classified as Class A, indicating that they have excellent fire resistance and are suitable for use in applications where stringent fire safety standards are required, such as in commercial buildings and public spaces. Materials with higher FSI and SDI values may be classified as Class B or Class C, indicating varying levels of fire resistance.

It identifies escape routes, emergency contacts, and the operation of fire safety equipment, providing clarity when it matters most. Beyond compliance, it's a proactive measure that instills confidence, empowers swift action, and ultimately curbs the devastating impact of fires.

9 Keys for Fire Safety Planning

1. Understand the Building: Familiarize yourself with the layout of your building, including escape routes, stairwells, and fire exits. Know the location of fire alarms and fire extinguishers.
2. Smoke Alarms: Install smoke alarms on every floor of your building and inside each sleeping area. Test them regularly, and replace batteries as needed.
3. Escape Routes: Establish clear and unobstructed escape routes from every room. Conduct fire drills to ensure everyone knows how to evacuate safely.
4. Emergency Numbers: Keep a list of emergency numbers near the phone. Include local fire department, medical services, and any relevant contact information.
5. Fire Extinguishers: Install fire extinguishers in key areas of your building, such as the kitchen and garage. Ensure that everyone knows how to use them.
6. Safety Equipment: Maintain safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, and emergency lighting, in good working order. Regular inspections are essential.
7. Evacuation Plan: Create a detailed evacuation plan that designates a meeting point outside the building. Ensure that all occupants are aware of this plan.
8. Caring for Vulnerable Individuals: If you have elderly family members, children, or individuals with special needs, ensure that your plan addresses their specific requirements.
9. Practice and Review: Conduct regular fire drills with all occupants. Review and update your fire safety plan periodically to address changing circumstances or building layouts.

Application Instructions: For optimal coverage, apply the product evenly, ensuring that the entire surface is coated. It is recommended to apply two coats for the best results. Allow the first coat to dry thoroughly before applying the second coat. Please note that the drying time may vary depending on temperature and humidity conditions.

Tools: You can use various application methods such as spraying, rolling, brushing, using an airless spray gun, or submerging unfinished wood or other forest products. Once the treatment is applied and dried, you can proceed to apply your choice of final finishes, including sealers, stains, undercoats, primers, and paint.

Coverage: The coverage of the product is approximately 200-300 square feet per gallon. The manufacturer recommends a minimum coverage of 200 square feet per gallon on wood surfaces. Do not dilute the product. Please be aware that it is not suitable for use on plants or greenery.
Surface Preparation: Before applying the product, ensure that the material is clean, dry, and free from oils. DRI-ONE® may not be effective when applied to non-absorbent surfaces or wood that has been previously sealed, painted, or treated with water repellents, stains, paints, or other finishes.

Dry Time: The drying time of DRI-ONE® should be gauged according to its slightly heavier than water consistency. Consider weather conditions, including rain and humidity.

Fire Test: Always conduct a fire test to ensure the effectiveness of your application. Perform a small-scale test similar to the NFPA 701 field test on a treated sample piece. Use a lighter, match, or butane lighter on the test piece to verify that the application was correctly applied. The flame must self-extinguish within 2 seconds once the fire source is removed. Test every 3-5 years, and if the treated area loses its protective barrier, reapply the product.
