Officially, today is the National Guard’s birthday, recognizing the first militia regiments formed in 1636 in Massachusetts. But if you know Virginia history, you know we’ve been doing this a bit longer.

Our heritage reaches back to the Jamestown militia of 1607, when early settlers organized to protect the colony.

So, while we join the celebration today, we also take pride in knowing we’ve been part of America’s story since one of its earliest chapters.

Wonderful Holiday meal with Blade Company and families! Pioneer 6 and 7 recognized several Soldiers as well as the SFRG with BN coins, a lot of great gifts were given and we shared an exceptional meal together. We also celebrated the upcoming retirement for SFC Bayless and were honored to have over 40 current and previous members from all over the state come back to partake in this special occasion with him. We miss our mobilized Soldiers and families but their presence was felt throughout the event.

So heartbreaking…. Prayers for her family and our brothers and sisters of the WV National Guard.

Soldier dies from Iraq injuries (The Daily Press)

Sgt. Derek R. "Bam" Banks was voted "most popular" during his senior year in 2001 at Bethel High School, where he played on the football and basketball teams.

"He's one of those guys that you notice," said Ernest Bethel, who was in Banks' class in high school and managed the basketball team. "He was a people person. He wanted to get people involved in what he was doing. I'm devastated for the family. I'll keep them in my prayers."

Banks, 24, died Wednesday as a result of injuries from a roadside bomb on Oct. 25 in Baghdad, Iraq. He was flown to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and later to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Banks was a combat engineer of the Virginia Army National Guard's 237th Engineer Company. The roadside explosive also killed Spc. David E. Lambert of Cedar Bluff in western Virginia and injured three other soldiers from Hampton Roads: Sgt. James "Andy" Corbett of Poquoson; and Pfc. Eric T. Holt and Spc. Joshua G. Primm, both of Williamsburg.
