SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans Available to Nebraska Small Businesses

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Small nonfarm businesses in five Nebraska counties and neighboring counties in South Dakota are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced Director Tanya N. Garfield of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West. These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in the following primary county that began May 10, 2022.

Primary Nebraska county: Cedar;
Neighboring Nebraska counties: Dixon, Knox, Pierce and Wayne;
Neighboring South Dakota counties: Clay and Yankton.

“SBA eligibility covers both the economic impacts on businesses dependent on farmers and ranchers that have suffered agricultural production losses caused by the disaster and businesses directly impacted by the disaster,” Garfield said.

Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred.

“Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. These loans have an interest rate of 2.935 percent for businesses and 1.875 percent for private nonprofit organizations, a maximum term of 30 years and are available to small businesses and most private nonprofits without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship,” Garfield said.

By law, SBA makes Economic Injury Disaster Loans available when the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture designates an agricultural disaster. The Secretary declared this disaster on May 13, 2022.

Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance. Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency about the U.S. Department of Agriculture assistance made available by the Secretary’s declaration. However, nurseries are eligible for SBA disaster assistance in drought disasters.

Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email [email protected] for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay services. Completed applications should be mailed to U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155.

The deadline to apply for economic injury is Jan. 13, 2023.

1/19/2022 NCDHD COVID-19 Omicron Update
Public Service Announcement

❗️Omicron Variant Is Detected in North Central District Health Department (NCDHD).❗️

The Omicron COVID-19 variant has been confirmed in NCDHD district through laboratory testing. Although the variant seems to cause milder symptoms, this variant has the potential to infect many more people than other COVID-19 variants, and thus can create increasing problems throughout our communities. NCDHD has seen this firsthand as NCDHD is recording new pandemic highs for case-rate/week, likely due to Omicron’s new presence in our district. NCDHD is expecting case-rates to continue to increase as a result for next several weeks.

We have the tools to fight Omicron. Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID-19, slow transmission, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. Masks offer protection against all variants. Testing can tell you if you are currently infected with COVID-19. Get your FREE at-home Rapid Antigen test to have on hand by ordering at covidtests.gov. Until we know more about the risk of Omicron, it is important to use all tools available to protect yourself and others.

The good news is that Nebraska data is showing being fully vaccinated and boosted is helping to prevent severe illness and hospitalization. Unvaccinated individuals are 8 times more likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 than fully vaccinated individuals and 36 times more likely to be hospitalized than those fully vaccinated AND boosted. Visit NCDHD’s website ncdhd.ne.gov to view NCDHD’s COVID-19 vaccine schedule or contact your local clinic/hospital for their COVID-19 vaccine schedule. Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) acting State Epidemiologist Dr. Matthew Donahue states, “The identification of omicron reinforces the urgency for Nebraskans to get vaccinated. The more Nebraskans are vaccinated, the less opportunity new SARS-CoV-2 variants will have to take hold in the state... We are doing our part to find new variants when they emerge and arrive in the state, older Nebraskans have done their part in getting vaccinated at high rates; we need younger Nebraskans to keep stepping up to protect themselves and each other by choosing to get vaccinated.”
