Yesterday we were grateful to be able to present and promote robotics to the 8th graders at Centralia Jr High and at Central City School. Unfortunately we had technical difficulties at the Jr high that caused only 1 out of 3 robots to run right. That said, all robots were running well at Central City. This was our first year presenting to the feeder schools and to see their interest and excitement was awesome, to say the least. Thank you to Mrs. Kimberly Emrick and Mr. Tim Branon for having us! We hope to do it again next year.

To say that the Sentinnel did a nice write up on our robotics program would be an understatement.

Thank you Steven Stilt for the opportunity for our kids to get the recognition they deserve.

A few weeks ago, CHS Robotics took delivery of a significant piece of equipment. This is our new laser cutter/etcher/engraver that was made possible by a very generous donation from CHS alumni Eric Mann and his employer, Intel.

If you watch the video below, you can see how precise and fast we can cut/etch materials like plastic, wood, glass, stone, leather, etc.

In addition, his donation helped CHS to purchase a cnc mill that is being located in Mr. Dinkleman’s drafting lab where students will be able to design parts and see them brought to life in various ways.

His support in our school means we will have significant abilities to design and create parts in various ways with different materials.

This season has been a whirlwind. Two seasons ago, we had a team that placed first in the Central South Illinois division of FTC Robotics. Last year, it all came to a screeching halt. Forty percent of teams did not compete during the 2020-2021 season, ours was one of them. This year, the kids who still wanted to build robots showed up and we got off to a slow start.

Due to COVID we weren’t able to make it to the first match of the year, discouraging to say the least. They kept at it and we went to the second and third competitions where we ended up with a record of 7-3.

This past week was the last week leading to our biggest match of the year, the state qualifier. Usually the week leading up to this match is filled with long hours making last minute changes and improvements. Well, they missed that opportunity due to Winter Storm Landon. On Friday, it was determined that the match would continue. With that news, two team members made it to the high school to finish what they could. On Saturday, we competed against 19 other teams and despite all the obstacles, our robot and drivers performed very well. For the season, we ended up with a record of 9-6.

For those who know what it takes to compete with theses robots, know that there is a lot of hours that go into making them work. They work year round on various tasks for the robot or team. It takes a lot of dedication, effort, knowledge, and hard work. I’m proud of this years team! For those that are moving on, I hope you can say you learned something. For those of you that are not graduating at the end of this year, you deserve a nice break. I look forward to what next year brings.
