Some gave years of service. Some gave decades. And some gave everything.

This Memorial Day, we are not simply marking the beginning of summer or enjoying a long weekend. We are standing still for a moment to remember the Americans who never made it home, the sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, friends, and heroes who laid down their lives for people they would never meet.

At the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, service and sacrifice are values we understand deeply.

Today, we honor those whose final act of service was giving their lives in defense of this nation and the freedoms we often take for granted.

Their names may fade from headlines, but their sacrifice must never fade from memory.🇺🇸

I am proud to officially welcome Deputy Josh Bakhuyzen and Deputy Ethan Borchardt to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Services Division as they begin serving and protecting the citizens of St. Joseph County.

Deputies Bakhuyzen and Borchardt graduated from the Kalamazoo Valley Police Academy on May 14, 2026, and were officially sworn in on May 18, 2026. Both men have worked hard to reach this point, and I am proud to have them join our team.

The photos shared here capture several important moments in their journey, from graduation and badge pinning ceremonies to taking their oath of office and beginning field training alongside Deputy Wertheimer. These moments represent the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment it takes to earn the privilege of wearing this badge.

At the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, we remain committed to professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and most importantly, service to our community. Josh and Ethan are outstanding additions to our office, and I am confident they will serve the people of St. Joseph County with pride, integrity, and honor.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming Deputy Josh Bakhuyzen and Deputy Ethan Borchardt to the Sheriff’s Office family. I look forward to watching both of these young deputies grow in their careers and become leaders within our profession.

This past Tuesday during the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners meeting, I had the honor of recognizing Corrections Deputy Jeremy Tyler for 25 years of service to the citizens of St. Joseph County and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeremy began his career in the jail and finished his career serving as our Court Security Deputy. Throughout those 25 years, Jeremy represented the values we expect from the men and women of this office. He treated people with dignity and respect, carried himself professionally, and understood the balance between compassion and accountability.

Jeremy earned the respect of the people he worked alongside, the citizens he served, and the inmates he encountered throughout his career. That respect was earned through years of fairness, professionalism, and the way he treated people every day.

During the ceremony, Jeremy was presented with the Distinguished Service Award, the American flag flown on the day of his retirement, a commemorative shadow box, and his retired badge.

On a personal level, Jeremy has also been a friend, and that is something I have valued greatly over the years. In this profession, friendships built through years of working together mean a great deal, and I am thankful for his friendship and support throughout the years.

I also want to thank Jeremy’s wife, Tami, and their family for the sacrifices they made throughout his career. A career in law enforcement is a commitment not only carried by the person wearing the badge, but also by the family standing beside them.

Jeremy, thank you for your 25 years of service, dedication, and sacrifice to this office and the citizens of St. Joseph County. We wish you nothing but the best in retirement.
