Center for Public Safety Excellence

Center for Public Safety Excellence Not-for-profit organization that accredits the continuous improvement of services delivered by first responder agencies and credentials emergency services officers
CPSE was started in 1996 as an independent organization from a collaboration of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the International City/County Managers Association (ICMA) as a vehicle to measure and recognize outstanding service delivery by local first responder agencies. In 2001 the mission expanded to include recognition of senior fire service personnel.
(13)

Through a detailed self-assessment process, first responder agencies detail their delivery of vital services. Peer assessors then visit the department and confirm the self-assessment documention. Successful evaluation leads to international recognition as an Accredited Agency.

Mission: CPSE promotes the continuous improvement of fire and emergency service agencies that serve communities worldwide by providing training and career resource information.

Mount Dora Fire Department - MDFD

Congratulations! #CPSE2020EC

The Mount Dora Fire Department in Mount Dora has received Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. Mount Dora Fire Department began this process in early 2017. With the leadership of our Accreditation Manager, Rich Loewer, MDFD was formally recognized as one of less than 300 agencies to achieve Internationally Accredited Agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. (CPSE). Nationally, there are only 84 Fire Departments that also have an ISO 2 Protection Class Rating as well as being accredited.

CFAI is dedicated to assisting the fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world in achieving excellence through self-assessment and accreditation in order to provide continuous quality improvement and the enhancement of service delivery to their communities. The CFAI process is voluntary, and provides an agency with an improvement model to assess their service delivery and performance internally and then works with a team of peers from other agencies to evaluate their completed self-assessment.

Fire Chief Tim Griner stated that “The Mount Dora Fire Department’s mission is to make things better for our community. Becoming accredited demonstrates how hard we are working to do that. This shows commitment of the agency, that we are making every effort to be good stewards, and serve our community with the highest quality of service. ‘Making things better’ is a continuous improvement process and a proactive way to plan for the future and find areas where we can improve on the quality of the services we provided.”

Asheville Fire Department

Congratulations! #CPSE2020EC

The Asheville Fire Department learned yesterday that they will be reaccredited after the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) unanimously approved to grant them accredited status at a public hearing in Orlando, FL.

Accreditation is a comprehensive self-assessment and evaluation that enables the department to examine service delivery and compare it to the industry standards. It is also a way to establish a method for achieving continuous organizational improvement. The accreditation process is voluntary and the CFAI is dedicated to assisting fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world. The recommendation was announced yesterday, following a week-long visit from a Site Assessment Team representing the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE).

“I am extremely proud of our hard-working and dedicated firefighters,” states Fire Chief Scott Burnette. “ Having an accredited status is a big win for our firefighters and our community. This designation affirms that our firefighters are providing the highest service levels and professionalism while protecting the lives and property of all people in our city.”

The Asheville Fire Department was initially accredited in 2005 and since then has been reaccredited a total of 4 times. AFD members spent countless staff hours examining past, current, and future service levels and internal performance to compare them to current research and industry best practices.
