Kansas Highway Patrol - Troop H

The Kansas Highway Patrol Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel and several Majors made the trip to Chanute to meet with Troop H personnel. This was the final stop of their statewide road trip.

The meeting began with the pinning of Lieutenant Raines and Captain Woods. Several KHP retirees were in attendance. They spoke of their career and appreciation of the job we’re doing.

We are grateful to have leadership who understands the importance of hearing directly from the boots on the ground!

The Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent, Colonel Erik Smith, announced that Master Trooper Jonathan Raines has been promoted to Lieutenant. He will serve as the Zone C Field Lieutenant for Troop H.

Raines joined the Patrol on July 6, 2016, as a member of Class #56. Following graduation from the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy, he was assigned to his first duty station in Linn County, Troop H. In 2021, he was promoted to Master Trooper. In 2026, he received the Kansas Highway Patrol Peer Recognition Award, which recognizes individuals who exemplify service, integrity, leadership, and community engagement.

A native of De Soto, Kansas, Raines is a graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School. Prior to joining the Patrol, he attended Johnson County Community College, where he earned an Associate of Science and Liberal Arts degree.

The Patrol congratulates Lieutenant Raines on his promotion and wishes him the best in this position.

This Follow Friday we’re heightening the awareness to a FREE preparedness program the KHP provides statewide.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is committed to helping schools, businesses, and many other organizations prepare for the unthinkable through our Kansas Active Shooter Mitigation (KASM) program. Led by Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers, this training provides practical information on violent intruder awareness, response considerations, and strategies to help mitigate potential threats before they occur.

Best of all, this program is offered at no cost to organizations across Kansas.

What we need:

➡️ 15 people in attendance

While patrolling U.S. Highway 400 in Cherokee County, one of our troopers observed a driver traveling 115 mph while attempting to pass another vehicle without sufficient clearance. Fortunately, the surrounding drivers were alert, and the incident did not result in a crash.

Remember, no matter where you're headed, it's more important to get there safely than on time. Reckless driving doesn't just endanger you, it endangers everyone sharing the road.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Superintendent, Colonel Erik Smith, announced that Lieutenant Christopher “Chris” Woods has been promoted to Captain. He will serve as the Troop H Commander, overseeing 16 counties in southeast Kansas.

Woods joined the Patrol on July 9, 2008, as a member of Class #48. After graduating from the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy, he was assigned to his first duty station in Allen County, Troop H. He was promoted to Master Trooper in 2013 and to Lieutenant in 2021, a position he held until his recent promotion.

In addition to his primary duties, Woods served on the Traffic Stop Team from 2015 to 2020, as a recruit class coach in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022, and as a field training officer from 2014 to 2021. Additionally, he received a Lifesaving Award in 2015 for actions which saved a life.

A native of Humboldt, Kansas, Woods is a graduate of Humboldt High School. He attended Allen Community College and Pittsburg State University, where he earned a degree in justice studies and psychology. Prior to joining the Patrol, he served with the Springfield Police Department in Springfield, Missouri, and the Pittsburg Police Department in Pittsburg, Kansas. Outside of work, Woods enjoys spending time with his family and traveling.

Please join me in congratulating Master Trooper Biggs on serving Kansas for 10 years with the Kansas Highway Patrol! All of his time has been here in Troop H. He has been a field training officer and radar/lidar instructor since 2018 and a child passenger safety technician since 2022.
