First time raising queens! It's been an amazing learning experience. I grafted 15 larva and it looks like 9 of them took. I'm happy I got more than 50% on my first try. Each queen cell is now in a mating nuc. Next step is for the queens to emerge and go on their mating flights. Exciting!! I couldn't have tried this without my amazing hubby!

Some of you asked for an update about my colony that had pesticide poisoning. Here they are today, they appear to have recovered! I’m going to open them up and check health of the queen this afternoon.

A honey bee’s tounge (proboscis) is nearly 1/4 inch long. That’s almost half the length of her body. She uses it like a straw to take in flower nectar. In this video she’s slurping droplets of sugar-syrup I feed when there’s not many flowers blooming. Do you see her proboscis?
