Charleston FRSO is facilitating a monthly reading group for the remainder of 2026 focusing on Palestinian resistance through a Marxist-Leninist lens.

We will be reading the works of leading figures in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine including: internal political programs, political writings of Ghassan Kanafani, the Autobiography of Leila Khaled, speeches and interviews by George Habash and dispatches from Israeli prison by Ahmad Sa’adat.

These works will help us, among other things, 1) get a strong understanding on the history of Palestinian resistance, 2) situate Zionism within larger imperialist structures and 3) read through applications of Marxism-Leninism to an anti-imperialist struggle across decades.

Join us at the federal courthouse to stand in solidarity with family of Walter Scott on Wednesday, May 13 at 11AM at a press conference to demand NO EARLY RELEASE FOR MICHAEL SLAGER!

On April 4, 2015, Walter Scott, a 50-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by Michael Slager, a local police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina. Slager stopped Scott for a non-functioning brake light and lied about the shooting by falsely claiming he acted in self-defense. He alleged Scott grabbed his stun gun, a narrative disproven by video taken by Feidin Santana that showed Slager shooting the unarmed Scott in the back while he fled. Slager further tried to cover up the shooting by planting the taser near Scott’s body, all of which was captured in Santana’s footage, which was publicly released four days after the shooting.

In May 2016, Slager was indicted on federal charges including violation of Scott’s civil rights and obstruction of justice. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of civil rights violations. In December 2017, Slager was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

It was recently been brought to the attention of the Scott family that Michael Slager has been quietly shaving time off his sentence due to a loophole in the First Step Act and he is now eligible for early release to a halfway house in 2027.

The Scott family is devastated by this news and will make their voices heard at a press conference on Wednesday.

Join us Wednesday, April 22nd at the main branch of the Charleson County Public Library (68 Calhoun Street) for a discussion of V. I. Lenin’s “The State and Revolution.”

Considered one of Lenin’s most significant contributions to political theory, “The State and Revolution” presented scientific rebuttals to then-contemporary criticisms of Marxist theory and practice of revolution, and articulated the function of the state in society before, during, and after the revolutionary period.

This text, originally published in the earliest years of history’s first socialist state, contains lessons that remain valuable to working class people fighting to transform the exploitative and unequal societies in which we live today.
