Meet West Virginia's newest Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars — 26 outstanding students who have committed to becoming the next generation of educators. 🍎📓

Selected for their academic achievement, leadership and passion for teaching, these incoming college freshmen will receive up to $40,000 in scholarship support as they prepare for careers in high-demand fields like math, science, special education and elementary education.

These future teachers will attend colleges and universities across West Virginia with one shared goal: making a difference in the lives of students and strengthening communities across the state.

Congrats to Willis Hundley on being the first confirmed graduate of the STAND Program from WVU Parkersburg!!

Hundley is a member of the WV Laborers and plans to continue his education in the WVU-P Supervisory Management Program.

This is exactly why STAND was created: to provide a pathway and training for WV construction workers to become leaders on the jobsite.

STAND is a state-funded program that gives Building Trades apprentices the opportunity to pursue an associate degree from a WV community & technical college TUITION-FREE!

“Programs like STAND open doors for the working class who may not otherwise have the chance to pursue higher education while building their careers in construction,” said Hundley.

“It definitely made it more financially secure. That was the big win for me, was the financial security. Being able to get an associate’s degree without all the out-of-pocket costs.”

Leadership is in full swing at Canaan Valley! BridgeValley Community & Technical College is proud to have three outstanding student leaders representing BV at the 20th Annual West Virginia Student Leadership Conference at Canaan Valley Resort & Conference Center!

Amy Hymes, Camber Newsome, and Jaime Blankenship are spending three days immersed in workshops, roundtables, and networking opportunities — all designed to sharpen leadership skills and inspire positive change on campus and in our communities.
