Welcome to the third issue of 2011. A&SoF is an e-newsletter, managed by BHS, with its sole purpose to enhance the filtration knowledge of the marketplace to solve actual plant problems.

This issue of A&SoF introduces a new approach to solving process problems called “Combination Filtration.” This approach relies upon the slurry analysis and testing to uncover the “process symptom” and then develop a process solution called “combination mechanical slurry conditioning and filtration.” It differs from the traditional approach of using coagulants and flocculants to change the particle characteristics for improved filtration.

The first paper, abstracted below, discuses conventional “step-down” filtration using primary and secondary cartridge filters. The second paper discusses techniques for actual batch or continuous mechanical slurry conditioning followed by process filtration.

This issue will focus on Combination Filtration with Mechanical Slurry Conditioning to improve trouble shooting and process optimization.

The BHS video describes the BHS expertise for thin-cake (3 mm - 25 mm) filtration, cake washing and drying. We have technologies based upon both pressure and vacuum filtration, for batch or continuous operations from high solids slurries (up to 50% solids) to clarification applications with solids to 1% and less (trace amounts).

BHS filters provide alternatives to centrifuges, nutsche filters, rotary vacuum filters and filter presses as well as manual plate filters, bag filters and other conventional separation equipment. Our units offer full containment and automatic discharge of solids. Each of our products is available in a small scale kilo-lab unit to over 200 m². Preliminary bench-scale tests can be conducted either in our labs in Charlotte or at your facility to determine the most applicable filtration method for your specific application.

In the pharmaceutical industry, batch – to – batch integrity is critical. For these applications, the crystals can be processed with a deep bed nutsche filter or centrifuge. However, some crystals, due to the compressibility, are more easily managed using thin-cake pressure filtration on the BHS Autopress. This technology consists of circular filter plates that are sealed in a movable housing. The filter plate design allows for forward and reverse flow operations and can be automatically cleaned to less than 1 ppm residual cross contamination. Riboflavin tests document this performance.

The BHS pressure plate filter is unique in its operation as there are no rotating plates, gears and bushings, and mechanical seals required. The motors on the top of the filter operate at different frequencies and the plates gently vibrate for cake discharge. The plates vibrate in the vertical and horizontal planes and the solids are conveyed in an oval pattern to the outside of the vessel. Gas assist helps in the discharge process.

The BHS Rotary Pressure Filter, model X16, provides for pressure filtration up to 6 bar, cake washing and drying on a continuous basis for slurries up to 50% solids. These are installed for chemicals, starch, cellulose, bio-energy and other applications.

BHS announces the largest BHS belt filter, 3.50 meters wide and 73.5 m2 of filter area and candle filter system. The belt filter is for filtration, washing and drying of high-valued product in an alkaline slurry while the candle filters recovery fines and recombine them in the process for maximum product recovery. The BHS design eliminates the need for rubber carrier belts, motor and VFD and provides for the highest vacuum possible, at the fixed tray. In addition, the BHS technology due to the fixed-tray design, eliminates vacuum-pressure rated flex hoses, additional hardware and rails/rollers for moving tray designs, and provides for complete separation of the filtrates and wash liquid as well as reduced maintenance costs for motors, tray movements, etc.
