North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS)

North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS) The North Carolina Association of Independent Schools: Serving Independent elementary and secondary schools since 1970.

The North Carolina Association of Independent Schools was incorporated in 1970 as a voluntary, nonprofit organization of independent elementary and secondary schools located throughout North Carolina. One of our schools was founded in 1772 and four others were started before 1900. NCAIS is an association of over 80 schools, with over 3500 teachers serving approximately 35,000 students. The association encourages communication among member schools, fosters the traditional freedom of the independent school to practice its philosophy of education, and serves as a liaison with regional and national accrediting agencies, and the National Association of Independent Schools. NCAIS schools do not discriminate in their admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, educational policies, and athletic and other school administered programs. NCAIS provides numerous educational and professional development opportunities for school administrators, teachers, trustees, parents and students. Our schools vary widely in size and type of campus. Some are coeducational, others are single sex; many are non-sectarian, while some have religious affiliations; most are day schools, but some offer boarding facilities. All are close-knit communities designed to nurture student achievement and develop habits of life long learning and community service.

Mission: The mission of NCAIS is to support and strengthen the independent schools of North Carolina through: Communication among member schools; Promotion of the traditional freedom of independent schools; Support of accreditation and regular evaluation to stimulate continuous school improvement; Advocacy of independent education in the public domain; Cooperation with regional and national organizations (e.g. SACS, SAIS, NAIS); Sponsorship of professional development opportunities for teachers, administrators, trustees and other school personnel; Sponsorship of leadership, educational and cultural opportunities for students and parents.

What stands to be lost in sales tax bill

Recent legislation in the NC Senate proposes placing unprecedented tax burdens on the state’s nonprofits. Taxing NC nonprofits, from universities to YMCAs, will harm NC communities and shift costs to taxpayers. Elon University president Leo Lambert writes, “As those new taxes are passed on to students in colleges and patients in hospitals, the effect would be to shift the burden for funding state operations to those who are often least able to pay.”Read more: http://bit.ly/1F6QfWu

Walter Weeks: Senate bill harms nonprofits, communities

Nonprofits provide essential services with greater efficiency and lower costs to taxpayers than government programs. Taxing nonprofits, as proposed by the NC Senate, will lead to higher long-term costs for NC taxpayers. Walter Weeks, mayor of Coats, NC, and executive director of Wake Enterprises, writes, “There is a very real chance that taxing nonprofits could lead to the opposite effect of what the state intends. Many charities may be forced out of business, which will drive up the demand for services - and calls for more taxpayer-supported help from the government.

Taxing nonprofits would harm N.C. communities

Nonprofits exist to serve the people of North Carolina, but recent tax legislation introduced in the Senate threatens these organizations and the communities they serve. Emily Zimmern of the Levine Museum of the New South writes, “Tax reform should not be achieved by limiting sales tax refunds at the expense of nonprofits. The unintended consequences are not only a diminished quality of life, but also job loss and increased burdens on taxpayers.” Read more in the Charlotte Observer: http://bit.ly/1yKKzAA

Emily Zimmern says a bill in the N.C. Senate would hurt organizations that serve needs, not shareholders.

hi everyone, my name is Laura Cobb and I am a Cary Academy Parent. I'm posting here on behalf of Cary Academy's beloved music teacher, Eric Grush. Mr. Grush has been CA's music teacher for 21 years and has been very active with NCAIS Honor Band. However, he is having to retire this year for health reasons. Both he and his family are facing many challenges in the next couple months ... but we can help! If you can, please visit Mr Grush's GoFundMe page and donate...and repost as you can. Thank you and all blessings to you!
