Albemarle County is 726 square miles located in Central Virginia with a population of 104,000 residents. Our county surrounds the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia and includes a wide variety of protection demands from residential to industrial. We have the Home of Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, high security government facilities, two colleges and some of the most beautif

ul scenic views. The fire and rescue system consist of 6 fire stations, 4 rescue stations, and 4 combination stations with 500 volunteers and 110 career staff.

** Information Release **

On Monday, May 18, 2026, at approximately 3:30 a.m., career and volunteer personnel from Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a report of a structure fire in the 100 block of Scarborough Place.

The fire suppression apparatus arrived on scene 7 minutes later and found smoke and fire showing from the roof of the middle townhome in a unit. One adult was removed from the structure but sustained no injuries. All other occupants evacuated without injury.

A total of three townhomes sustained damage from this incident. Two displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross and family and friends. No other injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Albemarle County Fire Marshal's Office, but is believed to be accidental.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue is hiring an EMS Instructor to help train, mentor, and develop career and volunteer personnel across our Fire Rescue system. From recruit academies and EMT classes to field training and continuing education, this role plays a critical part in strengthening emergency care in our community.

We’re looking for a certified Virginia Paramedic with a passion for teaching, leadership, and professional development.

Firefighter/EMT Zack Harpin explains how ACFR assisted with the Fire Investigators class alongside Charlottesville Fire Department and other localities by helping ignite vehicles for live burn scenarios and ensuring each fire was fully extinguished afterward.

** Information Release **

On Monday, May 4, 2026, at approximately 8:48 a.m., career and volunteer personnel from Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a report of a structure fire in the 3900 block of Red Hill Road.

The fire suppression apparatus arrived on scene 12 minutes later to find smoke and fire showing from one side of a residential home. Two adults and two children who were home at the time of the fire were able to safely self-evacuate prior to first responders' arrival. At this time, first responders are still searching for numerous pets.

The home is considered a total loss due to the fire. The displaced residents, four adults and three children, are being assisted by the Red Cross. No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Albemarle County Fire Marshal's Office but is believed to be accidental in nature.
