Thank you Paul for all of your kind words. It means a lot to me!

Dear Chaska Residents,

I am honored to be able to share a few thoughts on Jay Rohe’s candidacy for mayor of Chaska. I have been fortunate to have worked with Jay over the past 15 years and have also worked closely with the excellent team he put together at Legrand. Jay is one of the most honest, hard working and likable people that I know. I think that his business background, his years of service to his community on the city council and his personality combine to make him a very uniquely qualified candidate.

In business dealings with Jay I think that his openness and honesty are two of his greatest attributes. You always know where he stands and you can be assured that he will work tirelessly to keep his commitments.

What I find so impressive is that he has been able to build a great team that also exhibits these same characteristics on a daily basis. I think it’s the fact that Jay truly cares about people, his community and his family that drives these attributes.
In business Jay has been very successful in bringing competitors together to work for the good of our overall industry. I think that this ability to bring together disparate groups that often have very different personal goals to achieve common objectives is a skill that is in short supply in politics today.

Although my dealings with Jay have been in business, I have seen the excitement and care that he feels towards his town and community though our many conversations over the years. He is great at keeping his many friends across the country up to date on the challenges and successes that he faces working on the city council. He is great at soliciting input and advice and always keeps an open mind towards finding the best solution to a challenge.

His business background and years of service on the city council make Jay well qualified for the position of mayor. But it is Jays personality that really make him such an ideal public servant. Jay is truly one of the most likable people I have ever met. His willingness to listen to peoples challenges and work to overcome those is unmatched. His ability to bring disparate groups together and to turn competitors into friends is unique. I think what drives this is that Jay Rohe truly cares about people and his community and I am honored to be able to endorse him for the position of mayor!

There seems to be a feeling in place that you can't do city projects without raising taxes, well that says it all.

We don't hear or see a priority on city taxes. This is a major concern. There has been little coming out of the Mayor's office explaining the what and why's as a result of city planning. That is a major reason I ran for Mayor. I covered the entire city knocking on doors and most people don't understand what's in the plan or progress on any of the items. That’s do to a lack of communication from the Mayor’s office.

I agree it's important to work and agree on priorities as a city council and I'm committed to that approach however, the Mayor’s role has the primary responsibility to share with the community the what and why often, and that's not been the case. I am. committed to that communication.

When I hear it implied that you can't do projects without raising taxes I don't agree. What I’m saying is I would argue for a priority goal on managing city taxes which should drive a prioritized discussion of the financing options available to fund projects especially at times when many, many people are struggling.

I believe a higher priority should be placed on managing city taxes and thats a responsibility of the entire council. I know that priority has been in place in the past. I hope it can be a priority in the future.

Through all of my door knocking and having great conversations with our residents our Taxes come up in every conversation as a main concern.

In many of my conversations I have heard from you that there is a tipping point at where families would have to move out of Chaska if their taxes continue to rise at the same rate.

We have also talked about setting Strategic Goals for the community and how not having a clear strategic vision will end up with decisions being made that have higher financial implications to our taxpayers.

Looking back at City discussions to build these new facilities (Library, Public Works Bldg, Police Station, Renovate City Hall) it looks like they started this past year. A year ago the talk was about City Square West Downtown, now that project isn’t a priority due to the economic downturn and finding developers in this choppy economic climate. If that project does become a priority will it be another large tax increase ask of our tax payers?

These new projects that have a magnitude cost of $116m should have taken years to plan for to lessen the impact to tax payers. These projects will be financed by the city with bonds. Today, long term interest rates are the highest in 20 years and will cost taxpayers more dollars.

As we all have seen there is a need for new facilities. However, given the current economy and all of the inflation of higher prices, being placed on all of us, groceries, fuel, clothing, utilities and taxes, is this the right time?
Should we prioritize building these facilities and roll into longer term development thinking, instead of building them all at once? Prioritizing the facilities by the greatest need to be built first.

Supply chain issues and building supplies now cost more and will make these projects more expensive to build.

As I have mentioned throughout my campaign, our taxes have risen faster then Chanhassen and we now pay more in city tax ($258.00) on a median home then Chanhassen tax payers, this isn’t sustainable for the long-term. We need a strategic, well planned approach, that minimizes the financial burden being placed on Chaska taxpayers. We then need to over-communication to you the Chaska Taxpayers on the plan, bringing all voices to the discussion.

I wanted to share another one of my key priorities with all of you.

Our aging population in the community continues to grow. Keeping our active older adults engaged and involved in Chaska is key to our overall health of our community. Providing venues or activities is vital, The Lodge @ the Chaska Community Center is an awesome place to just hang out! We have activities like Fishing with Friends and the Chaska Cubs that are great ways to be active and involved. Our non profits and service groups ( Mi Casa, His House, Love INC, Launch Ministries, Bountiful Basket, Chaska Lions Club & Chaska Rotary) would love to have help and it’s another way to stay active and meet new people, plus serve our community and help others.

Our faith community offers many ways to engage and be involved, such as The Gathering weekly meals provided to the community.

Meals on Wheels and WeCab are all great ways to volunteer.

Keeping our active older adults engaged is good for the health of the individual and collectively for the community.

Quick campaign update!

As you can see by the picture (see highlighted areas in green) in this post we have walked almost every neighborhood in Chaska! We will continue to walk door to door until November 7th to reach everyone we possibly can in Chaska!!

I am estimating that is 60+ miles and over 120,000+ steps! It has truly been a great experience to talk to so many Chaska residents. Thank you to each of you who took time out of their busy schedule to talk to me about Chaska. I am having a lot of fun campaigning and you are the reason why!

After meeting so may of you I am certain that working together we can create a Community for All! Through all of our conversations, I have listened to what you believe is needed and vitally important for our community, and wanted to share our top priorities from those conversations.

1. Taxes- our taxes continue to rise and we need a strategic focus not a project focus that connects the Council’s decisions to tax impacts. This work will allow us to slow tax rate growth. Our taxes are now higher then Chanhassen. On a median home value of $370k our taxes are $258.00 higher then Chanhassen, their taxes went down and ours went up during the past 12 years.

2. Communication- there is a lack of communciation from the Mayor’s office on priority goals and sharing the metrics to show how we are performing. I will over-communicate to you and hold quarterly town halls.

3. Diversity- our community is more diverse and growing in diversity every year. We need to embrace our growing diversity and bring these new voices to the conversation. I plan to establish a Mayor’s sounding board to include all voices in our community.

4. Vision and Misson- the vision is not clear and there is not enough communication from the Mayor’s office articulating where we are headed as a community.
My plan is to start with the City Council, hold strategic planning meetings and have all of us aligned for the future and how to get there together. Reviewing this plan quarterly and the metrics to track our progress with the city council and Chaska residents.

Each of these areas align with my priority goals and plan for our Community. I am excited to continue working for each of you to create a better tomorrow for Chaska!

Two weeks to go until Election Day!
