Dearest Gentle Reader,

It has come to this authors attention that a posting has been made for a school board vacancy, and interested residents are invited to submit their applications for consideration before the deadline of 4:00 p.m. on June 17th.

Naturally, conversations along the Rivertown shoreline have a way of drifting beyond the ink of the official notice. And it would be inaccurate to suggest there has been any shortage of public commentary particularly from residents who have made no secret of their hope that Travis Neville would step down given ongoing concerns about participation and attendance.

However, in the absence of any such resignation, Rivertown continues to document only what is formally before it: one vacancy, one deadline, and one application window that will close as scheduled.

The rest, as always, flows just beneath the surface.

The Cheboygan board of education shall gather once more tonight at 6:30 for a special meeting featuring:
• Bids
• Grievance
• Policy
• Food Service Contract

Dearest gentle readers,

If you missed tonight’s board meeting, fear not. The saga must be continued next week, the board will reconvene for a special meeting next Tuesday.

On the agenda: Site Logic bid preparations for what seems to be an endless buffet of future projects. Spend, baby, spend.

Also requiring further deliberation? Whether an employee should be paid for work already performed. Yes, truly. The board requires an additional week to determine if labor completed deserves compensation. One can only assume local employment attorneys are preparing their invoices as we speak.

But wait — the evening offered another curious development.
The district has quietly altered its public comment forms to state residents must submit, prior to the beginning of the meeting, a form stating the topic they wish to discuss. Oddly enough, the board policy referenced on said form does not actually require this.
And so, members of the public tonight were denied the opportunity to speak because they did not possess psychic abilities allowing them to predict they would hear something worthy of comment before the meeting even began.

One cannot help but wonder:
Why is this board working so hard to discourage public participation?

Consider this your invitation to next Tuesday’s special meeting. Bring your questions. And perhaps bring your own copy of the Open Meetings Act.

Dearest gentle reader,

One must admit, Trustee Neville has stumbled onto a rare moment of truth: local elections matter. School boards matter.

Which is precisely why one cannot help but imagine how wonderful it would be if a certain school board seat were opened to someone actually willing to consistently show up, engage, and serve the district with the seriousness it deserves.

And speaking of local matters… tonight’s school board meeting is open to the public. Community members should strongly consider asking the board to adopt an attendance policy stating that members who fail to attend multiple consecutive meetings may be considered resigned.

After all, if local government is truly where our “thought energy” belongs.

Dearest gentle reader,

One might expect a school newsletter to inspire young minds, celebrate achievement, and perhaps—on occasion—remind us all of the values we hope to pass on. Imagine, then, the raised brows when this week’s “Quote of the Week” chose not wisdom, not perseverance, but a violence as its centerpiece.

And one cannot help but wonder… when did NFL commentary become part of the school news? Is this about celebrating a young athlete, or about inserting a familiar tone into spaces where it does not belong.

Because to some, it reads as an echo of a familiar voice...
And Rivertown has grown rather tired of that voice and its continual glorifications of the wrong things.

One can only marvel at the certainty with which some opine on marriage and parenthood titles they do not, in fact, hold.
To speak so boldly on partnerships one does not live, and children one has not raised, is not insight it is performance.
And what a curious aim it is, to reduce healthy, shared roles to grievance, when real partnership requires neither hierarchy nor theatrics.

Girls are not being raised to secure husbands; they are being raised to become whole people. And the message was never that women don’t need men—only that their worth does not depend on one.
