I found this article and discussion about Philadelphia’s tax structure and economic competitiveness really interesting, not just for the city, but for communities like Cheltenham as well.

One point that stood out to me is the idea that long-term fiscal health isn’t only about raising revenue, but also about creating the conditions for businesses, employers, investment, and residents to choose to stay and grow in a community.

While Cheltenham and Philadelphia are obviously very different places, many of the underlying questions feel familiar:
How do we remain competitive?
How do we support small businesses and commercial corridors?
How do we grow our tax base responsibly while still funding the services residents expect and deserve?

These are complicated conversations with no simple answers, but I think they’re important ones for all communities to engage in thoughtfully and proactively.

Worth the read.

There are only two options for generating more money to fund schools and city services, writes the former City Councilmember. And one is clearly better than the other.

Our community has an opportunity to come together for two young people facing an unimaginable loss.

Earlier this week, Jacquencia (11) and Kemley (18), two young Haitian immigrants living in Cheltenham, tragically lost their mother after a sudden and aggressive battle with cancer. With no immediate family here in the United States to support them, these two children are now navigating an unimaginable loss, largely on their own.

We are working through channels within the school community to help provide support and stability, but I know our community at large will want to help as well.

Below is a GoFundMe started by Kemley. In addition, we are collecting gift cards to ShopRite, Target, and DoorDash to help meet immediate everyday needs during this incredibly difficult time.

Financial donations can also be made directly for the benefit of the children through the school district. Donations can be dropped off at the Administration Building, attention Jen Mosher, for the Gaspard/Nicolas family. Smaller donations may also be dropped off at CBK East, also attention Jen Mosher.

Cheltenham has always shown up for neighbors in moments of need. If you are able to contribute — whether through a donation, sharing this post, or simply keeping these children in your thoughts — it would mean so much.

Ward 6 neighbors and friends, this might be of interest to you. The Board of Commissioners will be discussing a proposed safety improvement at the intersection of Cedar Road and Marvin Road at this Wednesday’s Public Works Committee meeting (7:30 PM on Zoom).

Over the past few years, residents and Township staff have raised concerns about safety at this intersection. In response, the Township engaged an engineering firm to study the area and recommend improvements.

Their recommendation is to:
• Remove the existing flashing warning lights
• Convert the intersection to an all-way stop
• Install additional stop signs and related signage

The goal is to improve visibility, predictability, and overall safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

If approved, the Township would move forward with PennDOT approval and complete the work in-house, with an estimated cost of under $10,000.

I know many neighbors have strong feelings and firsthand experience with this intersection, and I encourage you to tune in and share your thoughts.

As always, I welcome feedback here or directly.
