Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade

Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade The Chesapeake Rotary Club is the sponsoring organization for the City's 40 year traditional Christmas Parade. The Chesapeake Christmas Parade began 40 years ago with the Great Bridge Jaycee’s.
(25)

Chesapeake Rotary Club Past Presidents Ray Conner and David Hanson began working with the City Manager and the remaining Jaycees to take over as lead sponsor and organizer of the annual event. The name officially changed to the Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade in 2010 and a new logo including our Rotary Wheel was created. Our Club immediately formed a committee, now chaired by Rotarians Will Langford and Anthony Draper, to organize this event.

Help Us Help the Kids

Each year the Chesapeake Wine Festival donates over $100,000 to local charities. One of those charities we support is through our Rotary Club called Coats for Kids.

This is where we provide new coats for hundreds of local title one school students in need. We will miss the funds this year due to COVID-19 and would love to ask if you could help sponsor a Coat for a Kid for the Price of A Tasting Ticket to Our Wine Festival!

Due to uncertainty arising from Governor Northam’s ongoing COVID-19 social-distancing mandates, the Chesapeake Rotary Club regrets that the annual Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade is cancelled for 2020.

Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find a way to present a parade that would remain safe and enjoyable — in an acceptable environment — for our thousands of participants, volunteers, and spectators. With the passing of my Parade Co-Chair, Dianne Adcock, earlier this year, our Rotary community is still overcoming a great loss that has complicated planning such an important and massive event under existing circumstances.

Sincerely yours, I am

Anthony L. Draper, Esq., Co-Chair
Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade

Thanks, Dianne Copeland Adcock!

“When you wish upon a star…” That beloved song lyric characterizes the spirit and the amazing woman we knew as Dianne. As my friend and fellow Chesapeake Rotary Club member, Dianne was always the first person available to take the reins for projects dear to the hearts of her Chesapeake community. Dianne and I looked forward each year to serving as co-chairs of the Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade. Dianne felt honored to be involved in our local parade – even after her move to Florida, exchanging text messages with me at 2am -- but we were the ones honored with her skill and love for planning, promoting, and producing a quality parade for the citizens of Chesapeake. I had the pleasure of touring the White House and Capitol with Dianne last year as part of another Rotary-endorsed project of which Dianne was the logistics organizer, “Hike Across America,” -- an event that continues to bring attention to the plight of military Veterans in the United States. Just as the song lyric promises, Dianne proved that dreams really can become reality...and the day, out of the blue, that The Walt Disney Company requested to interview her led to the fulfillment of a professional dream she called “working for The Mouse.” On a personal level, in Dianne and Mike I found kindred spirits – and that is a very special feeling in a world where the events of life often overshadow the enjoyment of a “Slurpee” from the machine her dad helped invent. You touched us all, Dianne – as friends, neighbors, dancers, co-workers or humanitarians. I think we all agree when that 1939 song continues, “She brings to those who love, The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing.” Thank you, Dianne…until we meet, again.

From the Chesapeake Rotary Club from Peggy Matthews with the Parade Committee: Dear friends - I just talked with Dianne Adcock's husband Mike and he told me that Dianne passed away a few minutes ago. This is such sad news that we have lost such a wonderful person who was dear to us all. Please keep the family in your prayers - I know they are heartbroken.

The official photographer, Joe Scalco. Thousands and thousands of photographs were taken at the televised area of the Chesapeake Rotary Christmas parade. They will be published soon and they are always excellent. Sometimes we get caught up in the parade and forget to take pictures but when we have a professional like Joe, everything is so beautiful when we get to see it again in his photographs. Then line-up logistics for arrival time, animal pens, band feed, check in, lots of Customer service, and then on-time step off. When all the units are out, it’s strike time till midnight. VFW Post 2894 kept Chesapeake's Christmas Parade tradition intact by holding (a small) one on Saturday evening before the light show. That makes 37 years in a row. https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10164485795415285&id=257157270284
