Today is designated by the United States Congress as the National Day of Prayer. For many individuals, prayer is an essential part of daily life.

Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan and the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office join America in solidarity as we pray for direction and comfort in times of crisis and need.

"True prayer is neither a mere mental exercise nor a vocal performance. It is far deeper than that - it is spiritual transaction with the Creator of Heaven and Earth." - Charles Spurgeon

The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office has received a report of scammers impersonating a Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office lieutenant and demanding money from residents over the phone. We’re told a “Lieutenant Johnson” claims there is a warrant out for the resident’s arrest because they failed to report for a DNA test. The scammer tells the resident that they can receive a PR (personal recognizance) bond if they make a payment right then on the phone.

Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan wants to warn residents that this is a SCAM. No one named Lieutenant Johnson works for the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office and the phone number is NOT assigned to our agency. Furthermore, we will never ask for payment over the phone, nor offer to negotiate a payment in lieu of arrest. Anyone with questions about a warrant may contact the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office at (757) 382-6159.

New Chesapeake Community Programs Center ready to house inmates soon

Throwback Thursday: In 2018, Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan opened an expansion of the Chesapeake Correctional Center called the “Community Programs Center.” The expansion serves as a home base for our workforce, work release, re-entry programs, and inmate programs. Flash forward two years: the new facility helped streamline our operations and saved the city $2,031,442 in 2020 alone.

Some of the inmates at the Chesapeake City Jail will soon have a new place to better themselves.

Congratulations to Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan and Colonel W.C. Bennett, Jr.! They both recently earned their Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Certification (VSIC). The VSI, Virginia Sheriff’s Association, and the L. Douglas School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University developed the professional development program. The program seeks to instill the ideals of professionalism that come with the wisdom of experience and tested judgment attained and demonstrated through standards of achievement, including education, work experience, training, and professional development. Certification through this program provides recognition of the professional knowledge and commitment to excellence, life-long learning, and advancement of public safety as a profession.

Sheriff O’Sullivan joined the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office in 1992. He worked his way up the ranks to Undersheriff, before being sworn in as Sheriff in 2012. Colonel Bennett is a 39-year veteran of the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office and the first Black Undersheriff in the history of the city. Together they have served the citizens of Chesapeake for 68 years.
