Virginia Wing,

It is my honor to recognize the VAWG graduates of the 2020 National Staff College. This is the final iteration of the National Staff College as it has also changed with the new senior training program. With the COVID-19 restrictions these members had seminars, readings and had to write papers over the past 13 weeks instead of spending a week at Maxwell AFB. Our graduates are:

Major Dennis Borgerding, Coastal Composite Squadron
Major Robin Haight, Tidewater Composite Squadron - Civil Air Patrol
Major Jared Mast, Newport News Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol
Major David Schuh, Montgomery Composite Squadron

A job very well done!

Thank you for all you do.

Congratulations on the successful mission Tidewater Composite Squadron!

Virginia Wing,

Yesterday the Wing was tasked to find a PLB that was transmitting from the Hampton Road Airport (KPVG). I was notified by VDEM that they were working with AFRCC on a PLB located at KPVG. They were in contact with the owner who stated he lost it about 6 months ago. It is the kind that you have physically raise the antenna and turn it on. The airport staff went to his hanger and tried to find it, but had no luck. We discussed that we could use it as a training opportunity for the local squadron as they were meeting tonight. The Sqaudron had a team meet at the airport (they meet just off the airport) and start to prosecute the signal. Around the same time, AFRCC decided to open a mission.

I took IC and the team of 4 was getting a bouncing 121.5 signal throughout the airport. They determined early it was not in the owners hanger, but was starting to think it was in his wife’s car. After discussing with the owner, there was a very slight possibility it was in the car. Captain Lee wanted to keep looking for the PLB, and like all good ELT hunters, his team found it. I have included a picture. The thought is it was found and not knowing who owned it they set it off knowing that AFRCC and CAP would find the owner.

Fantastic job by Captain James Lee and his UDF team from the Tidewater Composite Squadron last night. The search was awarded a Find by AFRCC.

Virginia Wing Encampment, Civil Air Patrol

Virginia Wing,

Over the past few months, we have been in discussions, postponing and hoping to have our encampment this summer. But today the Wing and Encampment leadership came to the conclusion that it is a bridge too far. In order to have the encampment not only would the Commonwealth have to be in Phase 3, we would also have to meet the White House standards. At this point, Virginia will not meet the White House standards in time.
So it is with great regret that we are cancelling this summer’s encampment. The staff will work through refunds for those cadets and cadre who have paid their fees. We will be expanding the winter encampment for both cadre and students and will be held at the State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach. We are discussing how to expand the 2021 encampment to get all the students through.

Thank you for all you do!

Virginia Civil Air Patrol partners with National Guard to support COVID-19 testing

RICHMOND, Va.–

Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) Virginia Wing is responding to a request to support the Virginia National Guard, ensuring the safe and rapid transport of COVID-19 tests to and from Virginia’s eastern shore.

The Virginia National Guard contacted the Virginia Wing last Wednesday with a request to transport COVID-19 tests. Virginia CAP quickly developed a plan utilizing air and ground transportation to swiftly and securely transport the tests. Yesterday, the tests were loaded in to one of the wing’s twelve light aircraft and transported by pilot-in-command Capt Nikolas Kubli. CAP will be supporting the return of the tests to the laboratory for evaluation.

While the tests are transported, on-going coordination and planning is continuing for the future. 25 personnel from all areas of the state are collaborating in a virtual incident command post, leveraging the power of technology to communicate and continue serving the state when requested. The wing transitioned to a “warning” mobilization status last Friday, encouraging all members to report their availability and ensure they are prepared to support possible future missions.

The Virginia Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, with 23 squadrons spread throughout the Commonwealth has approximately 2000 members, twelve light aircraft, 29 multi-purpose vehicles and 2 cargo vans. These assets are available to federal, state and county governments, emergency responders and law enforcement agencies to perform search and rescue, homeland security, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance and counter-drug missions. For more information on the Virginia Wing of CAP visit the wing’s website at http://www.vawg.cap.gov and page at https://www.facebook.com/VAWGCAP.

Civil Air Patrol is the longtime auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and as such is a valued member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 single-engine aircraft and 1,550 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). It performs about 90% of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 82 lives annually. CAP’s 66,000members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Operating as a nonprofit organization, CAP also plays a leading role in STEM/aerospace education, and itsmembers serve as mentors to 28,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs. Civil Air Patrol

Civil Air Patrol marks its 78th anniversary today, having forged a legacy of selfless service and volunteerism that began taking shape less than a week before Pearl Harbor. Over nearly eight decades, CAP's missions have ranged from protecting domestic oil tankers against deadly German U-boat attacks to coming to local communities’ aid in the aftermath of natural and man-made disasters and developing cutting-edge technological tools to guide searchers to the missing. CAP continues to help develop the nation’s future leaders through its cadet program, and its aerospace education program promotes STEM education in U.S. classrooms. The U.S. Air Force auxiliary for more than 70 years, CAP is a recognized part of the Air Force Total Force. Its most recent initiatives include providing cadet pilot training as part of the response to the nation’s pilot shortage.

Take Back Day

On Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., local police departments and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 18th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Visit the site below to find a location near you to bring your pills for disposal. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last fall Americans turned in nearly 469 tons (more than 937,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 17 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 11.8 million pounds—approximately 5,900 tons—of pills.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and anonymous means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.

Civil Air Patrol’s Virginia Wing Prepares for Disaster Relief

Chesterfield, VA – With Hurricane Dorian hovering off the north coast of the Bahamas, the Civil Air Patrol’s Virginia Wing is making preparations to aid in disaster relief after the storm makes landfall. All available personnel and resources stand ready to respond after Dorian makes landfall.

Civil Air Patrol aircraft are being relocated, as necessary, to areas where they are less likely to suffer damage when the storm comes ashore. Preparations are being made for teams of Civil Air Patrol personnel to deploy to areas hardest hit by the natural disaster. Teams are trained to assist with Disaster Assessment as well as assisting with distribution of food, water and crucial supplies.

In 2018, 155 members of Virginia Wing responded to help staff Points of Distribution for crucial supplies in North Carolina and South Carolina following Hurricane Florence. Today, members stand ready to respond to Hurricane Dorian in the Commonwealth of Virginia or in neighboring states as required.

Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. CAP’s 63,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. In addition, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to over 26,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
