A budding Richmond-based mental healthcare provider earned some extra bragging rights this week.

MySpectrum Counseling & Coaching, an outpatient therapy clinic, was the top local company on Inc. Magazine’s Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S.

The rankings were announced Tuesday, with MySpectrum clocking in at No. 244, boasting a three-year revenue growth of 2,285 percent.

The five-year-old company specializes in a variety of therapy and counseling programs, both online for Virginia and out-of-state clients and in person at its Chesterfield office.

MySpectrum led a pack of 32 Richmond-area companies that landed a spot on the Inc. 5000. Close behind at No. 290 was consulting firm Top Line Growth Partners and staffing firm Summit Human Capital at No. 310. Summit was the top-ranking local business on last year’s Inc. list, earning the No. 20 spot.

The Richmond contingent of 32 marked the lowest number of companies the region has placed on the Inc. list since 2018. Last year 38 companies were ranked, down from 44 in 2021.

The nationwide rankings are based on revenue growth over the past three calendar years. Companies for this year’s list must have had minimum revenue of $100,000 in 2019 and $2 million in 2022 to qualify.

Statewide, 275 Virginia-based companies made the list, topped by Leesburg-based information technology firm Goldschmitt and Associates at No. 34 with 10,293 percent growth. The state had 258 companies on the list last year.

Along with Summit, 24 other local companies are making their return to the list, including local fashion retailer Sassy Jones, which topped the Richmond region at No. 24 in 2021.

MySpectrum offers a variety of mental health services, including trauma-informed therapy, autism counseling and substance abuse counseling, according to its website. It also has therapists who specialize in counseling for men, LGBTQ patients and other demographics as well as therapy for a range of conditions like depression, anxiety, grief, stress management and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The company employs 65 people, including 11 outpatient therapists and 49 teletherapists. The company is also nearing the launch of its second office location in Springfield, Virginia, central to Northern Virginia communities in Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and Annandale.

The top Richmond-area firm clocked in at No. 244 nationally, boasting a three-year revenue growth rate of 2,285 percent.

Sky-high strawberries: Groundbreaking in Chesterfield paves way for $300M vertical indoor farming facility

Ground broken in Chesterfield County is set to grow fresh produce – 30 feet in the air.

Plenty Unlimited Inc., a San Francisco-based company, has begun construction on a vertical indoor farming campus that, when completed, is expected to be the largest such operation in the world.

The campus, to be developed in phases totaling $300 million, sits on 120 acres in the Meadowville Technology Park. Several structures will be built, with the first planned to be a 100,000-square-foot vertical farm that’ll be used to grow Driscoll’s strawberries.

Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony attended by Gov. Glenn Youngkin and state and local leaders marked the beginning of the tech park’s newest development, where construction had already started. Most recently, vertical steel has gone up in the past two weeks.

Plenty is under contract to purchase the county-owned land for the campus over time. No sale has closed yet for the strawberry farm’s 75-acre parcel at 1600 Bermuda Hundred Road.

“One of the biggest successes of the last year was being able to welcome Plenty here in Virginia,” said Matt Lohr, Virginia’s secretary of agriculture and forestry. “Being able to be here today and see the work that’s being done on the $300 million campus … solidifies the commitment that the commonwealth is making to indoor farming.”

Operations will start in the coming months, with the farm’s produce expected in Northeast stores by late this year or early next year. Everything in the facility will be grown without pesticides.

Plenty’s will be a controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) facility, where it can manage temperature, humidity and other factors that aren’t possible in outdoor farming.

Plenty CEO Arama Kukutai said the farming campus will serve close to 100 million consumers on the East Coast from its location in the southeast corner of Chesterfield near the I-95 corridor.

“As consumers also demand the absolute peak freshness and quality, not shipped all the way from some other part of the country but grown here locally on the East Coast environment here in Virginia, it’s a huge opportunity for us to be able to effectively harvest today and have on the shelf tomorrow,” Kukutai said.

Plenty is currently hiring and will eventually employ an estimated 300 workers at its Chesterfield site.

“It’s really important to us. We’re not tourists,” Kukutai said of local hiring. “We’re here to be committed to a long-term future in the community.”

Plenty, founded in 2014, is based in San Francisco where it grows leafy greens. In May, the company opened an indoor vertical farm in Compton, California, to grow several varieties of lettuce.

Ahead of Plenty’s groundbreaking, Youngkin signed legislation in May expanding the agricultural sales tax exemption to include materials and equipment required to produce agricultural products in CEA facilities. Also announced earlier this summer, Virginia will host a “Great Indoors” symposium this fall on indoor farming and the use of technology and innovation to address global food insecurity.

Plenty will soon be joined by other new tenants in Meadowville Technology Park. Drug maker Civica is building a 60,000-square-foot lab and a Lego manufacturing facility broke ground last year.

Years in the making, Hidden Wit farm brewery to open in Moseley this summer

Nearly six years in the making, Hidden Wit Brewing Co. in the Moseley area of Chesterfield County, is on track to open at the end of the summer.

Construction is nearly complete on the 10-acre farm brewery at 21110 Hull Street Road. Inside the 10,000-square-foot building will be a tap room and dining area, event space, a full kitchen and a 20-barrel brewing system. The remaining land is being transformed into a patio with an outdoor bar, an turf lawn, a gazebo and a stage for live music.

“It’s been nerve-wracking to say the least, but you know, if it was easy anybody could do it,” co-owner Butch Taylor said of the six-year process to open the brewery. “We’re building something that we want to be proud of and the community to be proud of … I get choked up just thinking ab...

Imagine, for a moment, a day in the life of a visitor to Chesterfield. Perhaps they start the day with a hike at Pocahontas State Park, have lunch at one of the county’s growing restaurant options, then spend a relaxing afternoon sampling the local brewery and winery scene before taking in a show at Perkinson Center for the Arts or Swift Creek Mill Theatre.

Those are just a few of the many attractions that helped Chesterfield generate $535.9 million in total visitor spending in 2021, creating $26.1 million in direct local tax revenue – equivalent to 5 cents on the county’s real estate tax rate -- and supporting $148.8 million in wages.

As the county works to build on that success by bringing in even more people from out of town, continuing to diversify its tax base, reducing its reliance on residential property assessments and enhancing quality of life for residents, there’s a new tool available to localities across the Richmond region: the Tourism Improvement District (TID).

The General Assembly passed a state law in 2021 authorizing Virginia localities to create TIDs within their boundaries for the purpose of generating revenue to bolster local tourism efforts.

Following two public hearings, and with widespread support from Chesterfield hoteliers, the Board of Supervisors approved a proposed ordinance establishing a TID in the county.

Effective July 1, hotels and motels with more than 41 rooms will pay an assessment equivalent to 2% of their gross short-term rental revenue for the next 10 years. Revenue from the Tourism Improvement District will be used to bolster local tourism.

Rob Thompson has finally cracked into the Brandermill area with his breakfast restaurant franchise.

This week Thompson opened his latest outpost of Eggs Up Grill at 12050 Southshore Pointe Drive in the Southshore Shops center.

The former Chesterfield School Board member said the fast-growing area has been on his radar to expand his franchise, which now consists of three locations in the region. He hoped to open a restaurant there earlier but couldn’t find the right place at the time.

“It’s the fastest growing area of Chesterfield,” said Thompson, who owns the restaurants with his wife, Karla. “It made sense. We tried to open store number two there, but we just couldn’t find a space.”

The Southshore location opened Monday in a 3,400-square-foot space with seating for 140 people and 20 employees.

After years in the Boulders office park, a local civil engineering firm is looking to build a new headquarters — and it’s taking on the mantle of developer and landlord in the process.

Timmons Group plans to relocate its corporate headquarters to Springline at District 60, a mixed-use development planned for the site of Spring Rock Green shopping center at the interchange of Midlothian Turnpike and Chippenham Parkway.

The company’s new home base will occupy half of a five-story, 150,000-square-foot office building that Timmons intends to build itself. It will lease the other half of the building to Chesterfield County for offices for the school district’s administrators.

The LEGO Group Committing more than $1 million for Children’s Programs in Greater Richmond Area

To celebrate the groundbreaking, the LEGO Group revealed it will officially ramp up its community investments by providing over US $1 million to charitable organizations that support local children from disadvantaged backgrounds with learning through play programs.

This donation is above and beyond the US $300,000 provided in support of the Children's Museum of Richmond and the Science Museum of Virginia in 2022 as part of the ongoing LEGO Playful Learning Museum Network initiative.

Carsten Rasmussen said: "We are honored to have been so warmly welcomed by the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are committed to making a meaningful contribution to the community and giving children opportunities to realize their potential. We look forward to working with local partners and organizations to support initiatives that inspire kids.”

Other recipients of the donation provided in collaboration with the LEGO Foundation will be announced in the Summer.

The Lego Group broke ground Thursday on its $1 billion Chesterfield County manufacturing facility — launching the Danish toymaker’s first U.S. manufacturing plant and one of Virginia’s biggest economic development projects.

The Billund, Denmark-based toy company known for its brightly colored plastic toy bricks and construction sets plans to hire 1,761 people to work at its plant in Chesterfield’s Meadowville Technology Park over the next 10 years, with production, including molding plastic toys, expected to begin in the second half of 2025.

“We are not just building a factory, but we are building a culture of diverse, inclusive and playful workplaces for more than 1,700, or to be exact, 1,761,” said Lego Chief Operating Officer Carsten Rasmussen.

Lego is initially hiring 500 people to package toys in a temporary facility in Chesterfield’s Walthall Interchange Industrial Park and plans to begin those operations in the first half of 2024. So far, the company has hired about 20 people, Rasmussen said. Lego’s Virginia careers website shows several open positions, including construction project manager, director of human resources, facility director, materials planner and senior procurement manager.

With a ceremonial groundbreaking now in the books, Lego Group plans to start construction in a matter of months on its $1 billion factory in Chesterfield County.

The Danish toy company’s planned 1.7 million-square-foot factory in Meadowville Technology Park is expected to create more than 1,700 jobs over a 10-year period. The factory is also planned to feature solar panels to power the facility.

The completion of the facility and the start of production is expected in 2025. Site work is already underway.

Lego COO Carsten Rasmussen said he expected that construction on the manufacturing facility would start “in a few months.”

Lego marked the upcoming start of construction Thursday with an event attended by company representatives as well as Chesterfield, state and federal officials. On display at the event was a scale model of the Chesterfield factory made out of about 34,000 Lego bricks, as well as creations by RVA LUG, a local Lego hobbyist group.

03/21/2023

More than a decade ago, Chesterfield entered into a public-private partnership that transformed the dormant Cloverleaf Mall site into a thriving mixed-use development known as Stonebridge.

The success of that project convinced county leaders that Chesterfield should act as catalyst for the revitalization of another underutilized shopping center at the intersection of Midlothian Turnpike and Chippenham Parkway.

Chesterfield’s Economic Development Authority acquired the 42-acre Spring Rock Green property in September 2021, then hired internationally recognized architectural firm Cooper Carry to create a master plan for its redevelopment as a dense, walkable urban village.

The first tangible step in fulfilling that vision took place Tuesday morning, when Chesterfield ceremonially began the process of demolishing the shopping center to make way for a new mixed-use development known as Springline at District 60.

“It’s a historic event,” said Kevin Carroll, chair of the Board of Supervisors. “We’re thrilled the county could step in and breathe new life into a space that once was a prominent retail center in Chesterfield.”

Springline at District 60 will include a blend of residential, retail, office and entertainment uses with abundant green space and connectivity, featuring multiuse trails, wide streetscapes and structured parking to promote walkability, safety and convenience.

At the center of the development will be an open, green plaza/gathering space ideal for concerts, farmers markets, festivals and public events.

“Revitalization is such an important part of smart growth. It contributes to the county’s mission of reinvesting in existing communities while protecting environmental resources and promoting a vibrant, thriving economy and job base, generating significant tax revenue for the county,” said Dr. Mark Miller, who represents the Midlothian District on the Board of Supervisors.

ORTHOVIRGINIA, the largest orthopedic practice in Virginia, is partnering with LINGERFELT and HOURIGAN to create a new $50 million, 77,000 square foot orthopedics destination at Watkins Centre in Chesterfield County, Virginia.

Watkins Centre is a premier mixed-use development community located at the regional interchange of 288 and Midlothian Turnpike. The property is anchored by a Bon Secours Emergency Center, a four-story, 90,000 square-foot Class-A office building, a 50-bed Memory Care facility, and 780 residential units and retail.

Dr. David D. Nedeff, M.D., Vice President of ORTHOVIRGINIA, shares that the practice has been focused for some time on finding the perfect location for this orthopedic center. "This strategically located, state-of-the-art facility will allow our orthopedic specialists to continue to provide the highest quality of fully coordinated care to our patients," says Dr. Nedeff, adding that the project's program will include services ranging from advanced diagnostic imaging and surgery to physical and hand therapies in addition to a wide array of orthopedic clinics.

The architectural firm PSH+ is designing the project and Timmons Group is providing the project's site planning services.

Ryan Lingerfelt, President of LINGERFELT, says this team has partnered before on similar developments for ORTHOVIRGINIA. "LINGERFELT, HOURIGAN, and PSH+ are excited once again to team up with ORTHOVIRGINIA to design and deliver this project at Watkins Centre, continuing and building upon an established partnership extending over 20 years and many successful projects."

Mark Hourigan, CEO of HOURIGAN, says his firm and LINGERFELT have worked on over $150 million of projects together, including the ORTHOVIRGINIA facility in The Boulders. "We are genuinely appreciative of the opportunity to build upon our relationship with ORTHOVIRGINIA and look forward to delivering another successful project for ORTHOVIRGINIA and its partners. The building defers to the established aesthetics of the Watkin's Centre mixed-use development, while its design reflects the modern standard of care ORTHOVIRGINIA provides its patients. It will be a beautiful building in a great location."

Dr. Nedeff announces that the new facility is projected to open in the fall of 2024. "Our new facility will provide ORTHOVIRGINIA's patients with a conveniently located single point of access to the very best of orthopedic care in Virginia."
