October is National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month. Nationally, prescription drugs are the most commonly abused substances among young adults, next to ma*****na. 1 in 5 young adults has abused prescription medicine. Whether they're pain relievers, stimulants, or depressants, young people are using these substances to do anything from sleeping to studying or just to get high. Protect youth by keeping over the counter and prescription medications locked and talking to them about the dangers of prescription and over-the counter medicine abuse. You can pick up a free locking medication bag at any Chesterfield County Public Library location.

Here are some tips for trying a Sober or Low-ber October
1. Have a game plan
Set yourself a weekly unit target and stick to it. But if you go over your limit one week, don't stop trying – next week is a fresh start.
2. Switch from stronger stuff
Choose drinks that are lower in alcohol. Try lighter beers – under 4% ABV. As a rule of thumb, white and rosé wines are lower in strength than reds. Or try swapping some or all of your drinks for no or low-alcohol alternatives.
3. Stick with it!
It might take a bit of time to get used to the change from your usual choices, so if you notice a difference in taste with lower-strength drinks, do not give up! There are so many options, it's likely there's one out there for you – and switching means you can enjoy the health benefits of drinking less without losing your social life.
4. Shake up your social plans
Going for drinks is not the only way to see friends. You could watch a film, meet up for breakfast, grab a coffee and go for a walk, go bowling, head to the gym or sign up for a class to do together!
5. Set a booze budget
Sticking to a budgeted amount for alcohol can be a good way to drink less. If you are going out, try taking only the exact cash, or set up a spending alert on your card.
6. Beat boredom
If a drink is a way you handle boredom or stress, try finding something else to do instead. Exercise is a great stress reliever, and simple things like cleaning, a new hobby or DIY can be a good way to occupy mind and body.

09/23/2023

According to the Virginia Department of Health, va**ng is an epidemic among young people, with more than one in four high school students and one in 10 middle school students reported va**ng in the past 30 days.
To combat va**ng, Chesterfield County Public Schools invites parents and guardians to “How to Talk to Your Kids About Va**ng.” Two sessions of this free program are scheduled:
• 6:30-7:45 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Career and Technical Center @ Hull (13900 Hull Street Road); register at bit.ly/stopvape_ctc.
• 6:30-7:45 p.m. Oct. 12 at Thomas Dale High School main campus (3626 W. Hundred Road); register at bit.ly/stopvape_TDHS.
Both sessions will cover:
• Health risks of substance use during adolescence and young adulthood
• Myths, trends and concerns about va**ng and ma*****na use in young people
• Information and resources needed to address this issue with children
“It’s important for our parents and young people to understand just how dangerous and unhealthy va**ng is,” said Dr. Merv Daugherty, superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools. “We have to help our children with this because va**ng endangers their health and their futures.”
Experienced presenter Barbara Burke will lead the discussion about the dangers of va**ng and how to talk to your children about it. A retired social worker and co-founder of a recovery program at VCU, she has experience engaging families in helping teens change behaviors related to substance use.

An in-person workshop for families to get informed, be prepared, and take action to prevent va**ng and other substance use.

Making transitions fun can be helpful for kids and parents too !

Sometimes I get so focused on the tasks at hand that I forget that it doesn’t have to be so serious. Does that happen to you, too? You’re so focused on moving through the things that have to get done that playfulness gets pushed to the side?

When we bring playfulness into transitions it can be an awesome way to connect with children and lead to collaboration. It turns off the alarm center in the brain, allowing them to feel safe and secure.

What have you found helpful during transitions?
