CAP expertly navigates dangerous winter icing to deliver vaccine: When the Great Lakes Region Civil Air Patrol received a request from the FEMA’s office to transport the COVID-19 vaccine by air to several locations in Wisconsin and Michigan, the unit was poised for action. The request? To deliver the vaccine on behalf of the Indian Health Service—covering roughly 2.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. The CAP was created back in the 1940s to supplement and aid the US Air Force in a wide variety of critical tasks best suited for light, civilian-style aircraft.
Once the vaccine was loaded into the freezer containers required for its safe conduct, the pilots had a 12-hour window in which to get the vaccine to the clinic at the other end of the flight. For at least one segment, the commensurate travel time by truck would have been 30 hours.
Capt. Melissa Wentz Opsahl, from the IHS, said, “Civil Air Patrol was ideal for the intent of this mission which was to safely and successfully redistribute COVID-19 vaccine from Minnesota to a total of eight tribal and urban Indian organizations within the State of Michigan in as short of a timeframe as possible.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, more than 1,800 cadets missed an opportunity to attend in-person special activities and encampments in 2020. They stayed home and connected to their squadrons virtually. They missed flight academies. They missed life-changing experiences.

As a result, we have received a significant increase in applications and scholarship assistance. In 2021, help shape the lives of deserving cadets with the gift of life-changing experiences. Donate today!

In lieu of a wreath placement, the Winchester National Cemetery WAA team encourages the community to fulfill the mission of remembering and honoring our veterans by heading out to Winchester National Cemetery and participating in a virtual “Say Their Name” project. During the month of December, we ask for volunteers to go to the cemetery and record themselves saying the names of the veterans laid to rest, then upload the video to social media with the hashtag #SayTheirNamesWNC.

While at the cemetery, we ask volunteers to remember health and safety guidelines of social distancing and face coverings. Remember, you are on hallow grounds, be mindful of other visitors in the cemetery, and respectful of any internments that may be taking place.

Today, Cadets from Leesburg Composite Squadron participated in Wreaths Across America, an event which honors American Veterans who have served in the past and given their lives for our country. The Cadets layed wreaths on dozens of American soldiers graves, and payed respect to each branch of the military by laying wreaths in their honor. Our squadron was truly honored to participate in such a patriotic and humbling event. Thank you to those who participated. #CivilAirPatrol

16 VAWG Units have been awarded the QCUA!

Virginia Wing,

It is my distinct honor to announce the 16 units that have earned the 2020 Quality Cadet Unit Award for their performance in 2019-2020. This award recognizes squadrons that have vibrant cadet programs. Many of these units have received these consecutively and for many years.

A special congratulations to Newport News and Burke for meeting 8 out of 10 criteria, of which only 16 units in the nation met, and to Langley and Prince William for meeting 7 out of 10 criteria, of which only 52 units in the nation met. These four units are in top 13% of units for exceeding the minimum criterion.

I look forward to presenting the streamers and certificates at our wing conference in the spring.

One of my new jobs in CAP, following my tour as the MER Commander, is to serve as the Deputy Chief for Alumni Relations. We have had more than one million cadets, and more than double the number of adults pass through CAP but we haven't done a very good job of staying in contact. Facebook groups and other social media have brought a lot of us together, but CAP is a much larger organization then our home squadrons or wings. We want to bring everyone together to share stories and reconnect with CAP, our current and former members. Here is a link to the Alumni Association sign up page: https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/giving/alumni/ Alumni include cadets and senior members! Please sign up today! If you have questions, ask them here or message me. No cost and no obligation for anything – we will even start sending you our monthly newsletter.
