PAMF Training Session: Chicago, IL

Phragmites (the tall fluffy grass in the background of this picture) is an invasive grass that crowds out native species, blocks views, and degrades habitat. Do you have it at your marina? If so, sign up for this training from the Great Lakes Phragmites Collaborative to learn how their program can help you make better cost effective management decisions.

Are you currently managing or planning to manage Phragmites within the Great Lakes basin or in neighboring watersheds within Great Lake States or Provinces? If so, consider participating in the Phragmites Adaptive Management Framework (PAMF) and do your part to improve the effectiveness and efficien...

Lake Michigan’s deadly ‘freak wave’ of 1954 is Chicago folklore. Turns out it was a meteotsunami. And they happen pretty often.

Have you ever felt a #meteotsunami while out on the Lake? Chicago is the Great Lakes capital of these deadly waves caused by strong atmospheric disturbances.

As beach season approaches, research suggests Chicago is pummeled by more meteotsunamis — an obscure type of wave that can crash ashore for many minutes at a time and pose dangers to swimmers and boaters — than anywhere else in the Great Lakes.

Congratulations to Chicago Harbors' 31st Street Harbor on your Clean Marina Re-certification!

Clean Marinas need to be certified every 5 years to make sure they are still following all Best Management Practices listed in their initial checklist as well as see what new ones they have adopted.

31st Street Harbor is going to be a hard one to beat. Marinas need to use at least 50% of the recommended BMPs to gain Clean Marina status, but 31st Street blew it out of the water (pun intended) with 90%!

New Invasive Species Alert: Camphor Shot Borer (Cnestus mutilatus) bores into gas cans, fuel tanks, and fuel lines... which could leave you stranded out in the lake. These are not in Illinois yet, but keep your eyes out!

Stay safe out there while you're squeezing in your end of the season lake adventures! One to add for boaters: the air may be warm, but the water is not, and cold water kills. #safeboating

It's still hot here in Chicago, but Labor Day is over and the life guards are off duty! That's why it is extra important - more than ever - to be aware of hazardous currents. For tips about how you can stay safe, check out a group our coastal program is proud to be a part of - Great Lakes Water Safety Consortium.

Nearshore buoys deployed off Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor

Lake Michigan now has two new buoys that monitor lake conditions in real-time. Placed about a mile offshore—close to Waukegan Harbor and North Point Marina—each buoy will measure air and water temperatures, wave and wind conditions, and water currents every 20 minutes while deployed. The buoys are also equipped with webcams that transmit an image and video once per hour during daylight hours. Data will be hosted by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant. They're a great resource for knowing what the lake conditions are like before heading out!

Benefits for Marina Operators and Owners • Reduce waste disposal costs: Best Management Practices (BMPs) will reduce the amount of wastes produced so disposal costs will be less. • Generate new sources of revenue: Studies have shown that clean marinas can charge slightly higher slip fees and have fewer vacancies. • Receive free technical assistance: Best Management Practices guidebooks, training workshops and on-site visits are available to marina operators. • Reduce legal liabilities: By participating in the Clean Marina Program, marinas can ensure they are meeting all regulatory requirements, thus avoiding fines. • Enjoy free publicity: Illinois recognizes clean marinas through press releases, newsletters, and boating guides, etc. • Attract knowledgeable customers: clean marinas are aesthetically pleasing facilities that can attract responsible clientele that will follow good boating practices. • Improve water quality and habitat for living resources: The marina and boating industry depends on clean waters and a healthy coastal environment for their continued success. • Demonstrate the marina is a good steward of the environment: Illinois will distribute special burgees and signs for clean marinas to display. Clean marinas are also allowed to use the Illinois Clean Marina logo on all letterhead.
