Northeastern Illinois University Social Work

Northeastern Illinois University Social Work The Official page of Northeastern Illinois University's Social Work Program The mission of the Social Work Program is to provide quality education to social work students that will enable them to become competent, beginning level, generalist practitioners.
(5)

Our mission is consistent with the University’s mission of providing an accessible, quality education to students from a wide variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds. We believe education in social work goes beyond mere training in that education develops critical thinking skills and enhances a student’s ability to analyze, evaluate and synthesize concepts and ideas. We also believe that social work education is responsible for socializing students into the values and ethics of the profession, thus guiding students to incorporate values and attitudes into their educational and professional careers. This ensures that students will be flexible and competent to practice within an international context with diverse populations and groups. This mission is implemented through education, knowledge development, and service ultimately producing individuals who posses a professional social work identity competent to work in a global and international context using a generalist perspective.

In the spirit of women and their allies coming together for love and liberation, we offer A Day Without A Woman. We ask: do businesses support our communities, or do they drain our communities? Do they strive for gender equity or do they support the policies and leaders that perpetuate oppression? Do they align with a sustainable environment or do they profit off destruction and steal the futures of our children?

We saw what happened when millions of us stood together in January, and now we know that our army of love greatly outnumbers the army of fear, greed and hatred. On March 8th, International Women’s Day, let’s unite again in our communities for A Day Without A Woman. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing more information on what actions on that day can look like for you.

In the meantime, we are proud to support Strike4Democracy's F17 National Day of Action to Push Back Against Assaults on Democratic Principles. This Friday, February 17th, gather your friends, families, neighbors, and start brainstorming ideas for how you can enhance your community, stand up to this administration, integrate resistance and self-care into your daily routine, and how you will channel your efforts for good on March 8th.

Remember: this is a marathon, not a sprint. #DayWithoutAWoman #WomensMarch

STUDY TOUR OPPORTUNITY WITH NEIU SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM- 2nd CALL

PAKISTAN AND CHINA
FACULTY LED SHORT TERM STUDY TOUR- FALL 2016
WITH DR. JADE STANLEY, CHAIR AND PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL WORK

TRAVEL DATES: September 23- October 8, 2016

Greetings Social Work Students and Alumni,
i am so excited that several of you have shared your interest in the study tour to Pakistan and China that is being co-sponsored by the International Studies Program and Social Work Program. We are in the process of finalizing the selection of travelers and have space for a few more travelers,

Short-term programs are increasing in popularity for many reasons: they are generally more affordable than longer programs, they appeal to students who may be unwilling or unable to commit to a semester or a year abroad, and they allow students in structured academic programs of many disciplines, including social work, to gain experience that enhances their understanding of the profession in a global context. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has begun to focus heavily on the inclusion of global content into the social work curriculum. Recent issues of its Journal of Social Work Education have included exclusive articles on global social work practice by various research scholars. In addition, the CSWE created specific guidelines for educators who are interested in developing a global experience for their students, including the identification of seven types of study-abroad programs within the social work profession: academic courses abroad, practicum abroad, optional practicum abroad, international service-learning projects, international internships, independent learning abroad, and group study abroad (CSWE Council on Global Learning, Research, and Practice, 2010) The NEIU Social Work Program has been conducting faculty led short term study tours for the past 15 years to Ghana, South Africa, India, Mexico, and have found this to be one of the most enriching experiences for both students and faculty.

As part of our growing social work program and our investment in local and global connections, I am organizing a study tour to Pakistan and China during the fall semester September 23- October 8, 2016. This study tour is co-sponsored with the International Studies Program. We would begin the tour in Lahore first (departing Chicago on 23SEP and arriving Lahore on the evening of September 24, leaving to fly to Beijing on October 1, and returning to Chicago on October 8. The focus of the study tour both in Pakistan and China would be on Human Rights and Social Development. Students would attend some language courses and social and cultural expedition. Students interested in this experience should consider enrolling in SWK 322: International Social Work (3 credits) which meets on Wednesdays at 6:10-8:55pm at El Centro should you want/need course credit.

The cost for each student for the study tour would be approximately $2,000 for the airfare and a few internal costs. This will not include the costs of the visas for both China and Pakistan. We can accommodate 10 students for this study tour.

If you are interested or would like more information, Please email me by July 15 at [email protected] with the following information:

Thank you for the opportunity to recruit your students!

Here are a few positions we want to highlight because we have been having a hard time recruiting for them (the first is a great fit for someone pursuing social work):

https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=65777&fromSearch=true
https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=65613&fromSearch=true
https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=65761&fromSearch=true

Here is a link to all of our available positions: http://housingactionil.org/what-we-do/vista-positions/

The application is kind of tedious in that you have to create a profile and an application (your resume, but through a special way the AmeriCorps portal wants it). So please direct any questions the students, instructors, and anyone else has about the positions to [email protected]

Thanks and Best,
