Here is CTULocal1’s proposal to Mayor Lightfoot and Chicago Public Schools for in person by 1/18 with staff returning to buildings by 1/10 to help testing sign ups, remote learning on 1/12.

The Mayor rejected the offer.

We need to have parties negotiating, not walking away from opportunities to do so.

Alderperson Vasquez Statement Regarding CPS School Cancellation Announcement

As some of you may be aware, this evening, Chicago Public Schools announced that they would be cancelling school this Wednesday, after receiving word that the Chicago Teachers Union has voted to take action in order to keep their staff and students safe during this pandemic.

Looking at the COVID Omicron variant surge, the increase in case positivity (which has doubled week over week), and the limited availability of beds in hospitals due to the multitude cases, I am very concerned about the potential for further spread, especially considering the fact that there are still so many unvaccinated neighbors out there.

I also completely understand the value and need for in-person learning for our children as they have tried to sustain through the educational/developmental challenges of this pandemic.

It is my sincere hope that Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) can come to an agreement that puts public health first, so that we keep our community protected through the challenges COVID continues to present.

Public Health Priorities that I am in support of include:

1) Vaccination Requirement - Currently the City of Chicago has mandated a vaccination ID requirement for restaurants and other businesses. It makes perfect sense to require the same of students if school is to remain open.

2) Regular Testing Requirement - Requiring regular testing of students also makes sense, especially for those who may be exempted from vaccination due to medical conditions. At minimum it should be something that people have to opt out of, rather than opting in as is currently the protocol.

3) Providing Remote Options for Parents Who request it - Having CPS provide remote options (which they have already been able to set up and execute in the past) for those families who don’t feel comfortable sending their kids during this time is also appropriate. Other major cities have had their whole districts go remote during this time, so providing options for those who want it is a fair compromise.

4) Establishing Clear Data-Driven Thresholds - for when to close schools and go remote, that can be adhered to. Guidelines that had been set in the past were not adhered to by CPS and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), and going forward there needs to be an agreement on thresholds with required next steps.

There is a way to move forward with in-person education, but it does require taking into account the various needs of Chicago families and putting our public health at the center of it during a global pandemic.

This moment requires leadership through very difficult times with very real stakes, from CPS, the Mayor, and the Teacher’s Union. This isn’t about politics - it is about public health, with parents and students depending on us.

The reality is, this pandemic has changed our business completely. We need to do what we needs to be done to protect our artists, clients, business & our families at home. Please be patient with us, we are simply just doing what we think is the right thing during this crazy, crazy time. We appreciate every single one of you.

WHAT WE WILL BE REQUIRING:
-Your vaccine card. Can be a copy, photo, digital card. Name on card must match the name on your ID
-Vaccine card must have at least two of the Covid vaccines, booster is optional
-If you are not vaccinated, we will need to see a negative Covid test within 48 hours of your appointment. We will NOT be accepting a picture of an at-home test. It needs to be done at a facility that does PCR or rapid- it needs to be a written document that you can show your artist

#40Raps

Happy Sunday neighbors,

Today was the first day of Shovel Squad!

All over the 40th, over 50 volunteers shoveled for our senior and disabled neighbors.

At the same time, we had our Call Crew beginning wellness checks, led by Tomás Revolla and Paul Colson. Every Sunday, volunteers call Seniors in the ward to make sure they are doing ok, especially with the Omicron spread being what it is.

I shoveled about 5 homes and the stretch of Lincoln between Winnemac and Argyle (which thankfully was mostly clean already)! I also got to use the Snow blower that 40th Ward neighbors donated funds to get, along with shovels and vests.

Shoveling and snow blowing sidewalks for our folks reminded me of the joy of direct service. Sure, it started with some fumbles and grunts, but once I got into a groove, it was great. I was able to talk to one of our neighbors who was grateful that we could help.

It was a great little Winter workout.

I’m grateful for our #shovelsquad and #callcrew. These folks doing it time and time again, showing what community can do when it comes together.

If you’d like to join the Neighbor Network, to make calls, shovel, or help on the ground, email [email protected] and we will be happy to get you plugged in!
