What is Illinois Non-Compete Law? | Chicago Employment Attorney

Non-compete agreements in Illinois drew national attention in 2016. The state’s attorney general sued Jimmy John’s over non-compete agreements that it required of its sandwich makers and delivery drivers. Employees were required to sign the documents, which prevented them from working for a similar establishment for two years after leaving the company. Some may be surprised to learn that, such as in the case of Jimmy John’s, many low-wage workers are also expected to sign non-competes. To learn more about Illinois non-compete laws, check out our blog post.

Non-compete agreements limit the scope of future employment once a person leaves a company. Contact Bryan Wood to discuss options of a non-compete agreement.

Even in the 21st century, women securing equal pay for performing the same type of work as men remains a challenge. While this is often difficult to detect due to employer confidentiality, there are still people who discover wage disparity and wish to address it. If you are female and discover your wages are below those of your male colleagues who perform the same duties, you have a claim under the Equal Pay Act.

On the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death, I'm taking time to reflect on what his words and work have meant for my life and the lives of others. But we should also think about how different our lives, country and world would have been with 50 more years of his leadership and wisdom. We should all ask ourselves how we can help the moral arc of the universe bend more swiftly towards justice for everyone.

A 2018 wage gap report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce found that education has closed up the gender wage gap. Women must earn an additional degree to make as much as their male counterparts. "A woman with a bachelor's degree earns $61,000 per year on average, roughly equivalent to that of a man with an associate's degree," says the report. "The same rule holds true for women with master's degrees compared to men with bachelor's degrees and for each successive level of educational attainment.
