Meet Associate Communications Officer Jocelyn Esparza (she/her/hers)! She is a senior from Elk Grove Village, IL. Previously a Senator on the Justice Committee, ACO Esparza transitioned to the Communications Team and is excited to have grown SGLC's social media presence and hopes to continue to share the organization's initiatives with the student body.

Today, the Friday after Thanksgiving, we celebrate Native American Heritage Day. It is important that we learn and support Indigenous communities and acknowledge the stolen land we currently reside on. Are you taking an Engaged Learning course next semester? Check out the ASPIRE Scholarship! With the Office of Financial Aid and CEL, SGLC was able to pass legislation for this scholarship to help students complete their requirement while lessening any financial burdens. Link in our bio to the CEL website and application!

Introducing Senator Taylor Slonaker (she/her/hers)! She is a sophomore from Great Barrington, MA. A new member on the Academic Affairs committee, Senator Slonaker is excited to work on legislation to help support the LBTQ+ community at Loyola, like the LGBTQ Learning Community initiative. She is super talented as she can write music on the guitar and piano as well as sing!

Last year, the SGLC passed legislation for the formation of ASPIRE, All Students Prosper if Resources Exist. In collaboration with the Center for Experiential Learning and the Office of Financial Aid, this scholarship is able to help financially in-need students complete their required Engaged Learning. Congratulations to the following six students who met all criteria and are the first recipients of this scholarship. Keep on the lookout for applications for Spring 2021!

The SGLC formally recognizes November 16th as El Salvadoran Martyrs Day after passing the Salvadoran Jesuit Martyrs Recognition Resolution last spring. The Salvadoran Jesuit martyrs positively influenced the lives of leaders, institutions, and organization across the world. Today, visit the link in our bio for a live Memorial Prayer Service at 12pm.

Meet Senator Claire Butler-Harrison (she/her/hers)! She is a sophomore from Cincinnati, OH. A first-term Senator on the Safety and Wellness Committee, she also sits as the SGLC Chair for Loyola University Public Engagement! Senator Harrison joined SGLC because she not only wanted to do her part as a student in finding ways for the university to grow as an institution but also to improve the student experience for anyone that currently attends or will attend Loyola.

Issues she is ready to work on during her time in SGLC are diversity and inclusion, mental health resource accessibility, and reimagining the food system. In addition to being a new member to SGLC, Senator Nanda is also a Gannon Scholar!

A first time senator, she is excited to look into the process of making university contracts and information more accessible to the student body. Senator Richards is currently working as a Communications Associate for a freight rail advocacy organization in D.C.!

Introducing Senator Mereya Riopedre (she/her/hers)! She is a first-year student from Saint Louis, Missouri. Senator Riopedre hopes to get involved with activism on campus, specifically organizations focusing on environmental issues and feminism. One of her biggest inspirations is her dad because of his incredible work ethic and dedication to non-profit work, which is something she wants to replicate in her own life.
