Happy new year MPA students and welcome to Spring Semester 2019! Your PASA Board is meeting next WEDNESDAY JANUARY 16th at 5:30PM in CUPPA's conference room by the Professor's offices! Come boss them around and tell them what you want to do this semester and when you want to do it. PASA is especially excited to hear from students on how we should celebrate Chinese New Year! We can ask Sharon if they'll let us roast a pig in CUPPA's Lower Hall...or not. :P Silly thoughts like that are why we need YOU (MPA students) to provide us creative and fun ideas throughout the year. So come on -help us plan an amazing semester of events to help you network, grow, and make new friends!

Professor Janet Smith was Interviewed by the Chicago Tribune on the Millennial Population in Cook County. "U.S. Census Bureau data released this week indicates those aged 25 to 34 years old represent the largest chunk of Cook County’s population. That age range covers most, but not all of the generation commonly known as millennials, defined by Pew Research Center as those born from 1981 to 1996, who would now be 22 to 37 years old."

Side note: Half the people that say bad things about millennials are actually millennials....

A new Brown Bag Lunch Series will be held on various upcoming Friday afternoons! The Series will highlight research being done by both faculty and students.

To kick off the series, Dr. Kelly LeRoux will present her current research on: Increasing Voter Turnout in Underrepresented Communities: Does the Message Matter?

Summary: A problem for representative democracy is that voter turnout rates remain very low among younger and lower income citizens. While community-based nonprofits may help to address the voter participation gap, it remains unclear what kinds of nonpartisan messages lower income voters might find most persuasive. To answer this question, a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote field experiment was carried out in partnership with four nonprofits in low-income neighborhoods of Chicago in the weeks leading up to 2016 election. This presentation will highlight research results of that experiment, showing which messages are most effective.

Dr. LeRoux’s talk with take place on December 1st from 12:30pm – 1:30pm in the PA Conference room (Suite 2100 AEH). Bring a lunch and enjoy the discussion!
