Our next spotlight this #NationalVolunteerMonth is Joyce! "Volunteering at Lakeview Pantry feeds my soul. I believe everyone has a right to access good, fresh, healthy food at home. The Pantry is how I translate this belief into action. These past two years have been challenging in so many ways, yet working with a group of awesome people who really care, in service of good, honest people has given me a sense of agency towards creating positive change in my community." #EndHunger

On April 10, 1970, a dedicated group of women began a grassroots effort to help their neighbors. In their first year of operation, this small but mighty group – The People’s Pantry of Lakeview – collected food from local churches and temples and held weekly drives. They served just under 100 people in 1970!

Today, we serve residents living throughout Chicago through food, mental wellness and social services programs, aided by thousands of compassionate volunteers. We're looking forward to another year of exciting growth and change as we work to #EndHunger in Chicago. #FeedingHope

This #NationalVolunteerMonth, we're grateful for volunteer Fran, who began volunteering at Lakeview Pantry around 10 years ago! From Fran:

"Initially, I and a young man with some cognitive challenges volunteered as a team of two. Lakeview Pantry was wonderfully welcoming to us. A warm, supportive staff, great-hearted fellow volunteers and thankful clientele keep me looking forward to being there. It's indeed an honor and privilege (plus fun) to be part of Lakeview Pantry." #WeLoveOurVolunteers

In a pandemic, people might know they need food or housing. But how do you help them realize they also need therapy?

People who are in crisis might know they need food, or housing — tangible needs — but not realize they are also struggling mentally. Read more in the Chicago Tribune about organizations making space for these interconnected challenges: https://www.chicagotribune.com/people/health/ct-people-connecting-counseling-illinois-therapist-psychologist-shortage-20220303-tqk6ygza65dldbbiffx7v2xw5u-story.html

Special shoutout to Chicago Department of Public Health and Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), Heartland Alliance, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, Thresholds and Turning Point Behavioral Health Care Center, who are also mentioned here and offer robust and innovative services to our Chicago neighbors.

Mental health needs spiked during COVID-19. But how do you help people realize they need job help, and food, and counseling?

The Uptown Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Lakeview Pantry to host a Virtual Food Drive during the 4th annual Toast of Uptown! Lakeview Pantry works to reduce the barriers to accessing fresh groceries, social services, and free mental health counseling programs. They continue to meet a heightened need in the ongoing pandemic. Over the past year, visits to the Pantry's food distributions, which include Online Market and Home Delivery programs, have exceeded 51,000. That represents an increase of more than 54% from pre-pandemic times.
