Mission: Psychology as a Liberal Arts Major
Psychology is a diverse field of study that encompasses a variety of academic domains. Students who major in psychology at North Park University receive a general liberal arts education with psychology as a focus. While retaining the benefits of broader liberal arts opportunities, psychology also offers specific skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal awareness.
Psychology as a Science
North Park University psychology students receive solid preparation in the techniques of scientific research and statistical analysis, are exposed to influential research in the field, and learn to critically evaluate concepts and processes. Training in psychology as a science promotes important skills valued by employers and graduate schools, such as analytical thinking, effective oral and written communication, research and statistical proficiency, and independent work skills.
Psychology as a Profession
North Park University psychology students are also trained in the profession of psychology, where they are encouraged to apply scientific principles, methodologies, and practices to real world contexts. Traditionally, the profession of psychology has primarily included the clinical field, but modern practices also include psychology in the workplace, the classroom, and community and health services. Training in psychology as a profession also fosters important skills valued by employers and graduate schools, such as counseling and interpersonal skills, emotional maturity, empathetic understanding, competence in group work settings, and effective oral and written communication.
