"A lot of people just look at the crime itself and they never ask themselves, 'How did this young person wind up at this place in his life?'" Adolfo Davis, an alumni of PBMR's youth mentoring programs and former staff member, was featured in this past Sunday's edition of the @chicagotribune. As crime rates have been climbing in Chicago and some turn to the criminal justice system for answers, the needs of our youth are brought into focus.

Quoted in the article was Stephanie Tabashneck, senior fellow at Harvard University in law and applied neuroscience, who said, "Developments in neuroscience and behavioral research have really been groundbreaking in terms of how we understand youth criminal behavior... We know that children are teachable, their brains are wired for learning and they have a tremendous capacity for change."

To those who would encourage incarceration for young men and women, Adolfo says, "When they get released, they gonna release all that anger on society. And who gonna get it the most? The people close to them, the people in their communities."

Adolfo, who was sentenced to life without parole when he was only 14, was resentenced and released in 2020, and joined our team at PBMR. He has made an incredible impact on the young people, families, and community here at PBMR, which only three years ago no one knew would be possible. Inspired by Adolfo's story and influence, we work every day to meet the needs of our young people and continue offering the support that they truly need to move forward.

Catholic Sisters' Week! This week especially, we honor the women who embody the radical hospitality we seek to create here at PBMR.

On Monday evening, three of our incredible religious Sisters at PBMR--Sr. Donna, Sr. Carolyn, and Sr. Janet--shared some of the moments of hope, joy, and accompaniment that they have experienced in their work with mothers and families in our community, growing in the Urban Farm, and learning in the Education Lab.

Their love for our community has left an indelible mark, and PBMR would not be the same without them. Thank you, Sisters!

One Messy Human Family

"All of us have been both victim and offender in this human family, yet neither our wrongdoings nor our wounds can define us. I cannot put on the mantel of being a victim as though that is who I am now—I do not deny my suffering and hurt, but I am more than my pain and loss. Equally, I cannot allow any singular act to define who I am as a person. One who steals is not a thief, one who kills is not a murderer. It doesn’t discount the harm done; it demands accountability, but in the end, are we not still members of this family?"

Hold onto HOPE! Monday night, Ashley and 3 other incredible women from the PBMR Family shared their wisdom and stories of moving from hopelessness to hope. These women shared where they find hope in their most difficult moments—they graced over 70 of us who were blessed to witness their power, resilience, and grace as Black and Brown Women on the South Side of Chicago.

As we journey in this season of Lent, we remember the Paschal mystery that echoes in the lives of our community—that even in our sorrow and wounds, there is hope in the promise of new life. A rainbow after the storm!

Good times @MedievalTimes! Last weekend, these young Kings went to watch a Medieval battle of Jousting and sword fighting. In an epic battle of brawn, they cheered on the yellow knight in the fight.

"He did everything!" one young men said. "He was the one who got into it with the Queen and disrespected her loyal subjects. He was winning throughout the whole thing, but he lost in the end..."

Even with the loss, the boys were excited to experience something new and spend the day away with their mentors. Link in bio to sponsor more events for our youth to get out and just be kids!

Moving Forward Toward Graduation! Join us in congratulating Kashi, who just finished two more classes in the PBMR Ed Lab!

She just completed English B and Short Stories and said that of the two, "I liked English B better! I know I scored higher in both of them, so I can't complain... Right now, I'm finishing up consumer math and social studies." She has four more classes until she will graduate with her high school diploma!

We are so inspired by the dedication of Kashi and all of the students working in PBMR's Education Lab to earn their high school diplomas!
