"A lot of people just look at the crime itself and they never ask themselves, 'How did this young person wind up at this place in his life?'" Adolfo Davis, an alumni of PBMR's youth mentoring programs and former staff member, was featured in this past Sunday's edition of the @chicagotribune. As crime rates have been climbing in Chicago and some turn to the criminal justice system for answers, the needs of our youth are brought into focus.
Quoted in the article was Stephanie Tabashneck, senior fellow at Harvard University in law and applied neuroscience, who said, "Developments in neuroscience and behavioral research have really been groundbreaking in terms of how we understand youth criminal behavior... We know that children are teachable, their brains are wired for learning and they have a tremendous capacity for change."
To those who would encourage incarceration for young men and women, Adolfo says, "When they get released, they gonna release all that anger on society. And who gonna get it the most? The people close to them, the people in their communities."
Adolfo, who was sentenced to life without parole when he was only 14, was resentenced and released in 2020, and joined our team at PBMR. He has made an incredible impact on the young people, families, and community here at PBMR, which only three years ago no one knew would be possible. Inspired by Adolfo's story and influence, we work every day to meet the needs of our young people and continue offering the support that they truly need to move forward.
