Is your emergency T1D kit stocked and looking perfect? If you can take some time to start a kit or evaluate what you have, it can be a literal life-savor.

Managing diabetes can be even harder when dealing with a disaster. During an emergency crisis, it is critical for people with diabetes to have access to life-saving medications and supplies. ⁣

The Diabetes Disaster Response Coalition created a Diabetes Disaster Preparedness Plan which includes a checklist of supplies, information and guidelines to help you remain safe and healthy. Building a “diabetes kit” now can save a lot of worry and time when a disaster strikes.⁣

Black Lives Matter. Thank you @jdrfhq for your post. The YLC also wants to help black T1Ds who are critically underrepresented in this community. If you or anyone you know is a BIPOC living with type 1 in Chicago, we would love to support them. 🖤 Any other resources from other chapters specific to this issue would be greatly appreciated!

These are words from @jdrfhq CEO and President, @aaronjkowalski. We are speaking up.⁣

The JDRF Illinois Chapter believes that #BlackLivesMatter. Our city and our community is not immune to the systemic and institutionalized racism that affects our country. The intersectionality between being black and having type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a story we need to tell, and one we need to tell better.⁣

We commit to doing our part to make our society better. It’s OUR job to do better. It’s on US to do better.⁣

At JDRF we know that silence does not create progress or advancements, so we are taking the following actions to do better and amplify these voices:⁣

• Telling black T1D stories including on our social channels and at our events.⁣

• Building a more inclusive chapter, and expanding our outreach even more into underserved communities.⁣

• Listening to the needs of our black and brown communities of Illinois and help by providing T1D resources to ensure the community is safe, healthy and heard.⁣

The work is on us, and we’re committed to creating change.

Photo: I am a PhD candidate studying islet transplantation for T1D. This is a photo of a typical day in the lab.

1. In a typically work day, I have realized that I actually walk quite a lot. Being at home, tied to a computer monitor all day, I have noticed that my blood sugars have creeped up a bit. I am combatting this by taking my dog for extra long walks in the morning and evening.
2. I am looking forward to seeing the faces of all of my friends from the YLC.

1. In relation to having type 1, how are you adjusting during the pandemic? “I definitely miss going to the office, to the gym, and out with friends. I don’t think I could ever fully adjust to life without those things. But I am very grateful to the health care workers, pharmacy employees, and all others who have worked tirelessly to ensure diabetics still have access to all necessary medical supplies. From a Type 1 standpoint, the adjustment has been relatively smooth. May just have to order glucose tablets online instead of going to the drugstore!” 2. What are you most looking forward to with the up-coming One(House)Party? “The opportunity to get friends and family who don’t live in the Chicago area involved with the event.”

The goal of You're Just My Type is simple: show type 1 diabetics to the world, as they are, in their own words. We’re excited that three YLC members are going to be featured leading up to the One (House) Party - starting today with Kelsey Cleland!

#Repost @yourejustmytype1 with @make_repost

Name: Kelsey Cleland
Age: 28
Year Diagnosed: 2006
Location: Chicago “One of the positive side effects of staying home 98% of the time is that I’m cooking my own meals way more. I signed up for a meal delivery kit so I don’t have to go out to the grocery store and I get well balanced meals all week. As a diabetic I have a tough relationship with food and eat out regularly - so it’s good to get back in the swing of cooking (and cleaning my dishes :)). On the negative side of things, I wear the Dexcom G6 and my transmitter suddenly died on me and I don’t have another one. Now I’m second guessing myself - is this me being unprepared or is this a faulty transmitter? I need to call customer service to see if I can get a new one as soon as possible, but with everything else in my life (work, school, volunteering, the news cycle, general anxiety about everything outside my front door) I can’t find the time or energy right now to call.
What are you most looking forward to with the up-coming One (House) Party?

I’m looking forward to a lot of things! First, JDRF and nonprofits across the world are being hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. I’m excited to help fundraise as much money as we can in order to offset this loss. I’m also looking forward to people coming together from all over to enjoy a night of fun content and cool auction items that support local businesses. Last, I’m happy to share this event with my friends and family, who will get a peak into what I do as a YLC member. 😊”

Excited to share that WLS is officially a sponsor of the @jdrfilylc One House Party 🎊⠀

@bestfoodalex and I are not only both sponsors for this year's event, but we're members of the YLC 🙌⠀

So why @jdrfillinois? 🔵⠀

When Alex was 8 years old he was diagnosed with T1D and despite doing his best to manage his diabetes, he went into kidney failure a❗⠀

When we started dating he was already about 3 years into waiting for a kidney/pancreas transplant, in addition to other complications of his diabetes 💛⠀

While our relationship was as normal as it could be, we felt the impacts of T1D and kidney failure ✨⠀

There was minimal traveling because we had to be nearby if he got the transplant call, I carried low snacks in every purse just in case, we had date nights at home in the dark because he'd just gotten eye shots for his diabetic retinopathy, and every time his phone rang in the middle of the night we'd wake up hoping it was a transplant call ☎️⠀

On 8/15/19, just a week and a half after getting our second puppy, a month and a half before our wedding, and with only 8% kidney function left, he got the call to start fasting at 10pm and for us to be at the ER to begin transplant prep at midnight 😅⠀

We had a sleepless night in the ER followed by even more sleepless nights in the hospital and weeks of recovery. But more importantly, we had a healthy new life ahead of us 🙏⠀

Alex isn't diabetic anymore - T1D is caused by your pancreas not producing insulin and thanks to his transplant donor his new one does - but that doesn't mean that they've found a cure. It just means that one diagnosis that requires lifelong treatment has been changed for another 🙃⠀

I hope that one day, thanks to the tireless efforts by JDRF, researchers, persons with T1D, supporters, and more, we can turn #TypeOne into #TypeNone. I support JDRF so no other children have to grow up managing their blood sugars, so no other young adults have to have a kidney transplant in their 20s, and so that no other families have to wish for a little bit of normalcy 🔬⠀

So I hope you'll join us on May 28th at 8pm for our virtual One (House) Party.
