Subject: Shedd Aquarium Plants New Tribute Garden Honoring Veterans

Good morning,

Shedd Aquarium is looking for veterans to help plant a new garden at the aquarium honoring fellow service men and women and Gold Star mothers on Thursday, Oct. 22. Volunteers will work alongside Shedd’s horticulture team to prepare the soil and plant 30,000 spring-blooming bulbs in shades of yellow, gold and white on the aquarium’s North lawn facing Lake Michigan in honor of Gold Star Mothers.

During the one day event, volunteers will have a chance to socialize with fellow veterans, work alongside each other, as well as participate in creating a tribute garden planted for and by veterans that will be visible from the land, water and sky.

Please see the below media advisory and let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
Torie

Press Release
June 8, 2015

Potentially great news for Illinois veterans.

On May 31st a property tax bill passed both the Illinois House and Senate (SB-107). The bill not only calls for not taxing accessibility improvements to the homes of those requiring ramps, chair lifts, etc., but also increases the property tax homestead exemption for the primary residence of a service disabled veteran.
Once SB-107 is signed by the Governor, veterans with the highest disability ratings (70% - 100%) as determined by the VA will be exempt from property tax. Those rated by the VA as being 50-60% disabled will receive a $5,000.00 exemption off the assessed value, and those with ratings of 30-40% will receive a $2,500.00 exemption.
We believe that this will not only help our most disabled veterans stay in their homes, but also attract some of our country‚Äôs less disabled and very skilled ‚ÄúJob Ready‚ÄĚ veterans to Illinois. Many employers can take advantage of federal incentives to hire veterans, as well as greater incentives for hiring veterans with a 10% or greater disability. There are also both public and private incentives encouraging veterans to start up their own business. Making Illinois attractive to our veterans is an excellent step toward rebuilding our State‚Äôs economy.

2015 Howard E. Vander Clute Jr. Memorial Motorcycle Ride

Welcome, riders one and all, to support our nation‚Äôs men and women in uniform and honor the memory of Howard E. Vander Clute, Jr. (Commander-in-Chief 1979-80, Adjutant General 1981-1995). All net proceeds of the ride will be donated to VFW National Military Services to benefit those in uniform and their families. The agenda for Saturday, July 18, 2015 is being prepared. Thank you to all who participated in your 2014 ride to St. Louis. You raised more than $23,000 for U.S. troops and their families through our National Military Services (NMS) Program. You did that with just slightly more than 70 riders. This year, our goal is to double both the riders and the donation to NMS. This year‚Äôs final stop is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the site of the 116th National Convention for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This year‚Äôs rallying location will be VFW Post 709 in Sharpsburg, PA. We are still finalizing the details with the check presentation location and the ride from Post 709. To request additional information, including sign-up forms, please contact Kris Harmer [email protected] (816) 968-1117.

VFW Legislative Alert: Protect Military and Student Veterans' Benefits
Take Action!

Background: Last June, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4345, the Howard P. ‚ÄúBuck‚ÄĚ McKeon National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year (FY) 2015. The bill rejected the Administration‚Äôs request to significantly reduce military compensation and other cost saving measures, including reducing the troops‚Äô pay raise, increasing TRICARE pharmacy co-pays and reducing the basic housing allowance for military personnel. However, the Senate version of the bill, S. 2410, adopts the Pentagon‚Äôs proposals to cut military compensation and benefits.

Action Needed: We need your help to ensure the Senate protects service members’ pay and benefits as they negotiate a final version of the defense bill. Call and e-mail your Senators to ask them to sustain a 1.8 percent active duty pay raise established in law, reject cuts to the Basic Allowance for Housing, and reject proposed TRICARE pharmacy co-pay increases.
