Everyone Fails. Here’s How to Pick Yourself Back Up.

We beat ourselves up like no one else would. I love the concept of self compassion. It's a way out of this destructive habit that many of us are way too familiar with.

Learning to fail is a skill like any other — which means it takes practice.

Great article for fellow therapists! https://www.therapyden.com/news/30-things-i-learned-in-the-first-10-years-of-my-therapy-practice

I’d like to think that I have grown a lot in the ten years I’ve been in private practice. When I first started out, I was kind of all over the place. It took a couple years to really settle in and find my therapist voice. Looking back, I feel like I have become more wise so I decided to jot down...

This. If it helps someone struggling with addiction or a family coping with an addict/alcoholic, that's my point for posting it.

Quick Fix If You Need A Break

Lots of things going on these days leading people to feel overwhelmed, sad, angry and a variety of other feelings.

Here's a quick mindfulness music exercise you can do to help you feel better.

1. Choose a song you REALLY like and would be ok listening to a few times in a row.
2. Find it on your device, music library, youtube, somewhere you can access right now.
3. Listen mindfully. What this means....you're listening with specific attention to certain elements of the song.
First time...listen and ONLY pay attention to the beat (drums, bass).
Second time, listen only to the lyrics.
Third time listen only to the guitar.

Benefits- MANY!! You get to enjoy a song you really like. Music has been shown to have the ability to impact your mood. You give your mind a break from whatever is stressing you out. Taking a break can take you out of that fight or flight mode, and help you feel refocused and better able to manage whatever that stressful situation is.

The song that I used today was Bad, by U2- LiveAid 1985 (loudly!!)

Try it out. Let me know how it goes!

Real people describing what happens to them due to anxiety.

“We all know what it’s like to be anxious, but unless you’re one of the 40 million adults in the U.S. who has an anxiety disorder, it’s hard to understand how significantly persistent anxiety can affect your daily life. Because anxiety is more than worrying. It creeps up in different ways, and even has varying physical effects.”

Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh

Someone asked me, “Aren’t you worried about the state of the world?” I allowed myself to breathe and then I said, “What is most important is not to allow your anxiety about what happens in the world to fill your heart. If your heart is filled with anxiety, you will get sick, and you will not be able to help.”

Yes, there is tremendous suffering all over the world, but knowing this need not paralyze us. If we practice mindful breathing, mindful walking, mindful sitting, and working in mindfulness, we can try our best to help.

Quick Tip: Reduce Anxiety/Worry

Stressed out? Thoughts swirling around your mind? Try this quick tip to reduce stress, anxiety, and worry. Picture in your mind whatever it is you're worrying about. Next, take a deep breath, inhaling slowly. Pause. As you slowly exhale, imagine that a squeegee is erasing your stress, anxiety or worries. As you slowly pull the squeegee down, it wipes away your concern, and clears out your mind. [ 52 more words ]

Depression: Misunderstood

“I’m weak.” “Smile.” “Cheer up!” “Others have it worse.” “I can struggle through it.” “Focus on what you have.” “I should be happy.” These are just a few of the comments I frequently hear from clients – things that they have thought, or statements other people have made when they mention they are feeling depressed. In addition to their own struggles, one of the greatest challenges that come with depression is hearing other people’s comments and how you “should’’ feel-many of which are inaccurate. Have you ever been kept up at night worrying about a stressful situation? You wake up the next day, still thinking about your situation, it's the main thing on your mind all day! Take a break! Sometimes a good way to figure out how to manage our own situation is by focusing on something external to your own worries. Ask a friend how they're doing. [ 39 more words ]

I Get By With A Little Help

Several years ago I broke my ankle. I didn't just break it either, I needed surgery, the boot, the whole thing. I wasn't able to drive for a couple months, and getting back to walking was certainly a challenge. I remember shortly after my surgery, feeling frustrated (translation: stressed, anxious, sad to name a few!) with my own inability to take care of myself, do the things I wanted to do, come and go as I wanted to without any help, etc. [ 188 more words ]

Love is in the Air?

Love is in the air, or maybe not. February is often the month that brings up the topic of relationships, romance and love. Everywhere we go we’re reminded that Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For some though, relationships aren’t always filled with Hallmark cards, flowers and chocolate. Sometimes relationships can be a challenge. After the initial excitement fades, a relationship can turn routine- working late, taking care of your mountain of daily tasks, family and kids and forgetting to make time for each other. August Challenge: Daily Random Acts of Kindness
For August, I'm going to try to do a Random Act of Kindness at least once a day. I won't be posting what the "act" is every day...as that sort of takes away from the specialness of it. My hope is that it will help propel my mindset toward positivity. Even today I noticed a slight change in my mood as I've been going about my day, trying to find opportunities to do kind acts. I will check in to say how it's going. Imagine what your day would be like if everyone around you was focused on kindness. Anyone care to join?
