Bishop laments American Catholics' lack of 'moral consciousness' on race

“As the global Church has championed human dignity and equality, why does it appear that the Church in America has been incapable of taking decisive action and incapable of enunciating clear cut principles regarding racism?” he asked.

During his address to the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering, Bishop George Murry said recent events in our country have questioned exactly how far we’ve come on the issue of racism.

Fantastic images from the #CRSMLK day at Old St. Patrick's Church! Excited to keep the energy up, to build power, and to rise to the call of justice issues in our time. Let's respond to the deep, inner knowledge of the urgency of now.

On Monday, to honor Dr. King’s legacy CRS and 675 people from the metropolitan area came together to demand commitments from Chicago Aldermen to support the 14 recommendations from Coalition for Police Contracts Accountability. We also asked for commitments from several gubernatorial candidates to support measures to create safe communities by supporting legislation to license gun dealers in Illinois and require criminal background checks for gun store employees. We also asked them to support measures to reform the criminal justice system. #CRSMLK

51st World Day of Peace 2018: migrants and refugees - men and women in search of peace | Francis

"Most people migrate through regular channels. Some, however, take different routes, mainly out of desperation, when their own countries offer neither safety nor opportunity, and every legal pathway appears impractical, blocked or too slow. Many destination countries have seen the spread of rhetoric decrying the risks posed to national security or the high cost of welcoming new arrivals, and thus demeaning the human dignity due to all as sons and daughters of God. Those who, for what may be political reasons, foment fear of migrants instead of building peace are sowing violence, racial discrimination and xenophobia, which are matters of great concern for all those concerned for the safety of every human being." Pope Francis, World Day of Peace message

The Chicago Police Department admits it erroneously named Wilmer Catalan-Ramirez in its gang database, enabling an immigration raid that resulted in his fighting against deportation behind bars.

The city has agreed to modify their records and pen a letter in support of Catalan-Ramirez's visa application in their non-monetary settlement with his family. http://trib.in/2BNIDdL
