World Cancer Day, observed each year on February 4th, offers ACS an opportunity to increase awareness that cancer has no borders. It is an opportunity to remind the global community that ACS is committed to be a leader in the fight for a world without cancer and that we take a strategic and focused approach to combating cancer across the globe. Worldwide, cancer is the second leading cause of death. Cancer knows no boundaries, respects no borders. Mission Monday: Did you know that The American Cancer Society has spent more than $4.6 billion since 1946 funding the best science — making ACS the largest private, nonprofit source of cancer research funds in the United States. These investments have enabled ACS's researchers and scientists throughout the country to make major cancer discoveries…one of the several ways ACS is attacking cancer from every angle. Member Monday: Today we are highlighting a new member, Riley Byrne. Riley joined less than a week before Race to the 5Kyline and he successfully raised over $3,000 through his personal page! Here is some information about Riley...

Q. What inspired you to join the ABOA?
A. I’d say it was a combination of two things. The first being that I am at a point in my life where I wanted to start to give back a bit, in time and effort. There are a lot of great causes out there, and some that speak to different people in different ways. For me, none so much as ABOA. Here is a group of young professionals like myself in Chicago, who are trying to fight back against the toughest sickness in history. What I saw happening with great members such as Joelle Groboski and my brother Connor, and the results they were getting, I knew this would be a great cause to support in any way I could.

Q. How did you get involved so quickly and participate in our Race to the 5Kyline programming?
A. Well after my acceptance into ABOA on the 19th and the quick intro call with Chris on the 22nd, I got an understanding of the challenges nonprofits face during COVID. ABOA has a strong reliance on great events like the Soiree and other in-person events that they couldn’t do this year. I knew I had the pass to wait until next year to start trying to raise funds, but that’s not why I joined now. I heard Chris mention in our call about the race, and that spurned the idea to try something a little different than that to try and raise funds. I’m the kind of guy whose friends love to see go through a little pain/humiliation, so I tried to capitalize on that with my…”unique” race.

Q. What are you most looking forward to moving forward with the ABOA?
A. Might sound like a cliché answer in 2020, but for me its to meet the other people of this organization! The people I know are all awesome people, and a few like Emily Fitzgerald and Joelle were great role models of mine growing up. I really look forward to meeting everyone else, and get a true sense of the organization and community that this group fosters.

we touched down in Chicago 📍 over the weekend to support American Cancer Society Associate Board of Ambassadors Chicago Skyline Soiree - in short, it was AMAZING!! Congrats on another phenomenal year supporting the American Cancer Society! Thank you for your hospitality, knowledge & the big dose of inspiration.
We're nearing the end of National Volunteer Week but really for us, every week is National Volunteer Week! Without our volunteers, the ACS mission couldn't continue and we wouldn't be able to provide critical resources or fund life-saving research for survivors, fighters, and caregivers. We can't say it enough - thank you to our volunteers who are so passionate, dedicated, and DetermiNed! When you've got someone like Jeff on your team, you know it's a winning team! Continuing with National Volunteer Week, we're so proud to present Jeff Burgess! Jeff is a DetermiNation athlete dedicated to leading the fight for a world without cancer! He has run many races representing the American Cancer Society, including the Chicago Marathon and Naperville Half Marathon, and serves as a volunteer on the DetermiNation West Suburban Committee. In addition to supporting DetermiNation, Jeff is also a member of the American Cancer Society Associate Board of Ambassadors (ABOA). Last year, ACS recognized Jeff for his work on the ABOA with the New Member of the Year Award and the 2020 Visionary Award. Cancer hasn’t stopped, and neither has Jeff Burgess! Thank you for staying DetermiNed and your continued support of ACS, Jeff!
National Volunteer Week is one of our favorite times of the year! We love highlighting our amazing athletes, teammates, volunteers, and donors for all that they do for ACS! One of those amazing long-time volunteers is Kyle Polke! Kyle will be running the 2020 Bank of America Chicago Marathon and will be doing so with Team DetermNation once again! You may also recognize Kyle as a familiar face in the ACS family as he has served on the National Campus Leadership Team for Relay, is a key leader for our ACS CAN Illinois volunteer team, helps out with the American Cancer Society Associate Board of Ambassadors - really he does it ALL! We are so thankful for volunteers like Kyle! And on this Friday of National Volunteer Week, he'd like to share a message with you all :)
#Thankful4You, Becca Latham! “I got involved in the American Cancer Society for my aunt, grandma and grandfather, who all passed from cancer,” Becca said. Get involved she did. Becca graduated from Illinois State University and joined ACS as a Relay For Life community manager in California. After returning to Illinois, where she is currently the Communications Director of Deerfield Public Schools District 109, Becca began serving as an ACS volunteer for many Chicago events. She also joined our American Cancer Society Associate Board of Ambassadors, where she has been the mission chair for the past two years. “I love the way that the American Cancer Society gives us an opportunity to honor those who have passed, support those currently going through cancer, and ensure we are finding ways to eliminate this disease altogether,” Becca said. “I stay involved to ensure we get to see the day when cancer is eliminated.” As an ACS Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, http://cancer.org/drive, Becca also helps ensure cancer patients who don’t have a ride or are unable to drive themselves have transportation to and from medical appointments. “Becca’s commitment to ACS is paramount in both serving patients and raising funds to advance our mission,” said Kelly Perez, ACS program manager, mission delivery. “As a Road to Recovery coordinator, she helps match ACS drivers in Lake County with people who need the program. She takes great accountability in making these matches, as she truly knows the impact of reducing the transportation burden for individuals living with cancer.” Chris Way, ACS distinguished events development manager, agrees. “Becca is one of the most involved, passionate and driven young professionals on the ABOA. In 2020 she will serve as the ABOA marketing director and I cannot wait to see how she will boost our brand and promote the ABOA as a critical force in the fight against cancer. Becca never forgets what we are working towards: to put an end to this horrible disease. We are extremely fortunate to have her as a volunteer and I know Becca will continue to help us achieve incredible feats as we continue to attack cancer from all angles.” To learn more about becoming an ACS Illinois volunteer, direct message us or visit http://cancer.org/volunteer.
