While Black parents are forced to talk to their children about race early and often, "... white parents think race is not as relevant... They don't have these conversations with their kids. And so that leaves the kids open to learning about race from other sources," says Dr. Marianne Celano, director of the Emory University Parent Child Interaction Therapy Program. What It Takes to Build an Anti-Racist Classroom

"Disrupting Whiteness in teacher education requires an explicit, shared commitment among all stakeholders to center race and address racism. By Whiteness, I am not referring to white people per se—I am talking about ways of wielding power and privilege that maintain white supremacy."

UTEP instructor Dr. Kay Fujiyoshi's powerful approach to building anti-racist classrooms is highlighted in this article in Literary Hub: http://ow.ly/QfUR50EyD0l #teachers #antiracist

Op-Ed: The devastating messages we send Black children about their worth

Sharhonda Bossier has written a powerful oped in the LA Times: the "messages we send Black children about their worth." Sharhonda is an activist and the CEO of Education Leaders of Color; she was also "a rough-and-tumble kid on the block."

She writes, "Unable to challenge 'the system,' I challenged every proxy for the system I encountered ... As with Ma’Khia, my Blackness and propensity to resort to bullying and fighting in my teens could have easily gotten me killed by police." http://ow.ly/8EPV50EyDbe

As with Ma’Khia Bryant, my Blackness and propensity to fight as a teen could have easily gotten me killed by police. Many of you would have shrugged and moved on.
