Everyone knows someone who is out of work, or who is looking to get started in a real career. Check out an IMF video:
Illinois Manufacturing Foundation (IMF) is always looking for good students. For us this means people who find it hard to get work, especially work with family-supporting wages. This happens when a person did not get the skills s/he needed for a real job when in school, or their skills are no longer in demand, or they have a criminal record, or they have completed high school and don’t want to go to college but lack skills or a work history. Each of you probably knows someone who really wants to work and would make reliable, hard-working employees but they just don’t have the skills for a high-wage, high demand job Most people know someone who fits this description.
Please reflect for a few minutes on your friends and relatives and then forward the link to an IMF YouTube video to such a person. The video shows IMF’s director, Ric Gudell, with Domingo Hernandez, a graduate of IMF’s machinist training program. You know from your own experience that our training provides real skill for real jobs and that our students graduate without taking on any educational debt. You can send this video to as many as you think might benefit from it, but please commit to sending it to at least one. Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE-UHzj76Eo

EMPLOYER STORIES: PRECISION MACHINING
Where Can You Find the Skills You Need?
Steve’s Story
• Can’t recruit the skilled workers needed to maintain and grow his company.
To meet ongoing production needs as well as provide for continued growth, Steve, the president of a thriving machining company, needed a source of skilled machinists. The company manufactures close-tolerance, machined surgical instrumentation and implants used primarily in orthopedic and spinal surgical procedures.
Early on Steve learned that people who could work at the tolerance levels required for these products are extraordinarily difficult to find. The employers with workers this skilled pay them well and hang on to them, in bad times as well as good, just like Steve’s company does. If a few people with these skills turn up on the market from time to time, they tend to come with other baggage, which makes them difficult to hire.
At first Steve grew his firm by asking the skilled machinists he already employed to put in extra hours. There was, of course, an obvious limit to this approach to meeting his skilled labor needs. In anticipation of reaching that limit, he put in place a training program to develop skilled workers.
Says Steve, “We quickly learned that we got the best results when we trained people internally who had solid basic skills and were highly motivated to better themselves. IMF has proved our most productive source of trainees. This includes ex-offenders. We know exactly what we are getting in terms of basic skills and capabilities, and can set up our training to pick up where IMF left off. The ex-offenders we got from this source have been grateful for the second chance we are giving them. They also have something to prove to themselves and the world at large. Those are great motivators.” ###
Illinois Manufacturing Foundation is Participating in #givingtuesday. Our goal is to raise $35,000 to purchase a 3 axis vertical milling machine. This will upgrade and improve our program.
