Steans: CARES Act funding to critical hospitals will help fight COVID

$140 million in federal CARES Act payments will be distributed to crucial hospitals throughout the state to offset the costs of fighting the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most important things we can do right now is ensure the long-term viability of Medicaid and our hospital system, which is why I sponsored Senate Bill 2541 earlier this year to increase provider rates for hospitals serving low-income communities.

06/07/2020

After careful consideration, my Virtual Town Hall with State Reps. Kelly Cassidy and Greg Harris originally scheduled for tomorrow (June 8) has been cancelled.

When we returned from session, we were eager to share the details of the emergency session and FY21 budget with our constituents. We scheduled an electronic town hall for this Monday, June 8 in the evening, before the events of the last two weeks and the incredibly necessary discussions of institutional racism and police brutality that must continue. Neighborhoods are still reeling from the impact of the protests and people are still rightly taking to the streets. This Monday, the Rogers Park Community will be coming together to march from Willye White Park to Warren Park (flyer below). As a result, we’ve decided to postpone this Monday’s town hall meeting so our neighbors can participate in the march if they choose.

Each of us is committed to the work ahead in reforming our justice system and dismantling the layers of harm of systemic racism, but we also acknowledge that our voices must be in support and amplification of the voices of our colleagues in the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. We expect to reschedule the town hall soon with a new agenda of reviewing possible legislative action on police reform, restoration of communities damaged by unrest, reinvestment in the redevelopment of Black and Brown Communities as well as addressing the underlying racial biases that plague our criminal justice system. In the meantime, we encourage anyone who is participating in protests to remember that COVID-19 remains a risk and to wear face coverings and be as mindful of social distancing as possible. After being part of large group gatherings like marches or protests, please follow CDC guidance and observe a 14-day self-isolation period, especially if you have close contact with people who are considered especially vulnerable to the virus. Testing availability has increased now so anyone who would like to be tested after participating in large group activities can do so, but keep in mind that there still needs to be a period of self isolation before testing.

Steans’ cannabis plan ensures quicker hiring, fairer market

The cannabis plan we passed yesterday came about through cooperation across the aisle and between both chambers of the legislature, with input from the governor’s administration, law enforcement, and business. I am grateful for their hard work and for our ability to get this done despite the challenges we’ve faced during the pandemic. It ensures small shops who are preparing to get their licenses won't be at a disadvantage when it comes to real estate and supply, ensures the benefits of cannabis aren’t just going to privileged corporations, and is going to help new employees get to work faster. This afternoon, Governor JB Pritzker issued a Stay at Home Order for the people of Illinois. You can find an FAQ that should answer most of your questions at the link below.

Importantly: Vital services such as medical facilities, grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, and banks and credit unions will remain open, and you are not prevented from going out for supplies, caring for your family members, or walking your dog.

This is an unprecedented action, made in light of an unprecedented situation, but scientific experts agree it is the only way to prevent our health care providers and first responders from being overwhelmed. Please continue to follow me here for more updates.
