UIC Electronic Visualization Laboratory Research and Education The Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago is an interdisciplinary graduate student research laboratory specializing in the design and development of high-resolution computer graphics, visualization, virtual reality and collaboration display systems (hardware and software) connected over high-speed networks.

Announcing SAGE3! Researchers at University of Hawaii at Manoa's LAVA lab, UIC College of Engineering's EVL, and Virginia Tech's Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology - ICAT were awarded a $5 million National Science Foundation grant to synergize two complementary technologies — large-scale data visualization and artificial intelligence — to create the Smart Amplified Group Environment (SAGE3) open-source software.

The Chicago Design Archive is showcasing highlights of its collection in "Chicago Design Milestones," an installation opening July 1st at 150 Media Stream. Daria Tsoupikova, associate professor in the UIC School of Design and an affiliated faculty member of UIC Electronic Visualization Laboratory, recently received a $150,000 grant from the University of Illinois (UI) System’s Presidential Initiative to Celebrate the Impact of the Arts and the Humanities. She will collaborate with Andrew Johnson, Lance Long, Arthur Nishimoto and Chicago-based theater director Jo Cattell. They will partner with Goodman Theatre, whose youth program works with Chicago’s diverse demographics of middle-grade and teenage kids. Project collaborators will develop multi-user theatrical performances that merge real and virtual worlds with the goal of encouraging stronger theater engagement with tech-savvy younger audiences.

Elisabeta Marai and her graduate students are working with MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Iowa, and University of Minnesota on two major grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute on the design and development of computer programs to assist medical professionals determine the best treatment options for cancer patients, specifically those suffering from head and neck cancer.

Chicago’s Reader newsletter gave a great review of the art exhibition “Chicago New Media 1973-1992” currently at Gallery 400 from November 1 until December 15, 2018. The writer concluded: "[The organizers] created a compelling installation with almost 100 contributing artists, scientists, developers, and public program participants. The resulting showcase of once-innovative equipment, archival materials, school curricula, interactive timelines, and video games not only captures the energy of play but also the processes by which we see ourselves today."

National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded the UIC Electronic Visualization Laboratory with a three-year grant to purchase a highly flexible, scalable, high-throughput system for Big Data - which we are calling “Composable Platform as a Service Instrument for Deep Learning & Visualization (COMPaaS DLV)”. It will provide UIC College of Engineering faculty with critical infrastructure on which to pursue fundamental research in deep learning, visualization, and a combination of deep learning and visualization.

Liz Marai-Renieris, associate professor of Computer Science and EVL in UIC College of Engineering, co-chaired the meeting "Biological Data Visualization: Crossroads" on April 15-20, 2018, held at Dagstuhl, at the Leibniz Center for Informatics, Germany. EVL Continues UCSD Collaboration to Enhance and Sustain CHASE-CI (see https://www.evl.uic.edu/events/2594) The UIC Electronic Visualization Laboratory’s (EVL) long-time collaborator, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant, to start October 2021, to Enhance and Sustain their CHASE-CI project. As part of EVL’s ongoing commitment to this research effort, EVL will host GPU resources and data servers to enhance and extend UCSD’s Pacific Research Platform (PRP) Nautilus Hypercluster through 2021-2024.
