It’s been a good day! Congrats Senator Rob Martwick!

We won! After going to bed with a 27 vote lead on election night, the Vote-By-Mail returns have come in as expected. Our lead has grown to 5,354 votes and we expect that margin to grow as more ballots are counted. Today, my opponent called and conceded the race. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work on the critical issues that our state and community face. I am thrilled that I will have a talented and committed partner in those efforts with Rep. Lindsey LaPointe. I have so many people to thank. First and foremost, I am the worlds luckiest person, to be loved and supported by my wonderful wife, Sharon Martwick, my parents and my sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, some of which went above and beyond. I had a fantastic campaign staff, Tyler Dixon, Alexandra Sobor, John Riordan, and campaign mom Kerrie Avino. I am eternally grateful for the work of the 38th Ward and Norwood Park Township Democratic Organizations. Thank you Frank Avino, David M. Feller, Ed Bannon, Jacob Kaplan, Paul Alongi, Joe Alongi, Dan Pogorzelski, JC Strzalka-Steil, Kieran Fitzgerald, Susan Zimny, Stephanie Lieberman, Dawn Parent, Tasos Foukas, Tony Guida, Seamus Glynn, Ethan Brady, Craig Fallico, Jennifer Guerrero, William Collins, and Vittorio Verrechio. Thank you to our super crew of volunteers, Dorothy Frantz, Jen Jones, Judy Kehoe, Georgette Foss, Mary Claire Peceny, Yvonne Wesley, Ben Whipple, Danny Aviles, James O'Brien, Don Richie, Andrew Tonachel, Matthew Cox, Casey Smagala, Leanne, Gehrig, Quenton Galvin, Yolanda and Bob Simonsis, Paula Guilianao, Barb Bonnello, Michael Rabbit, Kelly Carroll, Emily Melbye, Jill Arena, Suzy Jackson, Catherine Colombo, Katie Smith, Kamil Mozwecz, Steve McKenzie, Mary Shapiro, Mark Dobrzycki, Robert Zwolinski, Scott Parent, Lynn Taormina, Annette Baase, Kathy Ryg, Ray Sanders, and all that helped in some small way. I promise I will always work hard and do my best to represent the 10th District. Time to celebrate!

Foundation Tavern & Grille

Jill and I have shared many celebrations and game nights at our neighborhood restaurant Foundation Tavern & Grille. And though they’ve been open less than a year we have welcomed their excellent staff to our community. The loss of our new friend, the chef, Cory Neill, is a loss for all of us. With deep sympathy we send our condolences.

They will reopen this Wednesday. I hope you'll join us to show your support.

The Foundation family is devastated to announce the passing of our Chef, Cory Neill. He was always cooking with a smile and brightening the days of all of those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. He was truly passionate about his craft and was always looking for ways to improve the kitchen and the establishment as a whole. Our family will not be the same without Cory. Our deepest condolences go out to Cory’s family and friends. In remembrance of Cory Neill, we will be closed today, December 10th. The Foundation Family is in the process of planning a memorial to honor Cory’s legacy.
We will keep the community updated as we get more details.
Thank you for your support.

Every time you pick up a coffee at your local café, grab lunch at the mom-and-pop shop, or buy a new bag from a local store, you’re making an impact in your community. In fact, for every dollar spent at a small business in the U.S., approximately 67 cents stays in the local community.

Hop on the NWS Holiday Trolley on Nov. 30th! Free rides through several nearby business districts, making it easy to shop local. #livelifelocally this holiday season! For more details https://www.facebook.com/events/2596887980368785/

Housing Commissioner Marisa Novara addresses guests at the ribbon cutting of the CHA housing above the Independence Branch Library. I am proud of the work we did as a community to rally in support of this development. Of the 44 units almost all are full and many local residents whom have struggled for years with housing instability now call this home. Housing affordability is an issue in every community.

Landmarks Illinois has recognized what the many community members, and now patrons of Eris Brewery and Cider House, knew from our early meetings about this endeavor. Katy Pizza and Michelle Foik had a vision of a unique and sustainable repurposing of this historic building that would invigorate the Irving Park Neighborhood’s commercial corridor. They have succeed on many levels and I congratulate them on this well deserved recognition.

So here's what happens when a neighborhood group, a prospective business & city/state elected officials work together: award winning renovation & reuse! Congrats, Eris Brewery and Cider House team! We're so glad you chose Old Irving Park to realize your dream.

Another smokin' year of delicious craft beer and BBQ! The Inglorious Basters literally cooked their butts off. Thanks again to the organizers and all the folks who came out to support the Old Irving Park Beer & BBQ Challenge 2019 and Saint Viator Parish Chicago. Big shout out to Open Outcry Brewing Company owner John Brand and Brewmaster Will Turner for making a great pairing both in the keg and as servers. We had a lot of fun making our recipe this year. Looking forward to next year already!

Fearless Cooking

Good night, friends. See you all tomorrow. 10am to 8pm, every day.

Thank you for sharing your dream with us. Looking forward to signing up for a cooking class or two!
07/18/2019

Thank you for sharing your dream with us. Looking forward to signing up for a cooking class or two!

1,365 Days. It has been 1,365 days (and who knows how many sleepless nights) since an idea popped into my (Catherine's) head and refused to leave. It settled itself in there, nice and cozy. And when I argued that it was a stupid idea, that it wasn't something I was capable of, it put its fingers in its ears and yelled, "LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA!!!"

So here we are, on this stormy afternoon (which is more appropriate than I can begin to describe), able to announce that we have PASSED OUR FINAL INSPECTION AND WILL OPEN OUR DOORS ON MONDAY, JULY THE 22ND AT 10:00 AM!

There are more people to thank than a FB post can handle. So for now let me say: Fearless Cooking has a great team, including three Fearless Managers - Tracy, Kris and Linda. We are all so very excited to welcome you in.

And you, as a community, have been more supportive than I can possibly explain. No one on our team goes anywhere in this neighborhood without someone asking about the store. Customers have stopped me in the street to ask if everything is going okay and if they can help. This means the world to us, and especially to me, who wonders every day how and why someone goes from Sociology professor to store owner. Your kindness has meant everything.

We have so many cool and exciting things in the works for all of you. With that said, in the coming weeks I ask one thing - be patient with us as we get everything up and running. Classes are coming! But not on Monday. Our website will be fully functional! But not on Monday. Let us work out the kinks so that we can give you the very, very best experience we can.

More details coming soon - but we really hope to see you next week when you can drop by.

Much love,
The Fearless Cooking Team

About Alderman Arena

John Arena served as Alderman of the 45th Ward for two terms and is the current committeeman. John Arena and his family have lived on the Northwest Side since 1996, and we was a successful small business owner before running for alderman. With his wife Jill, they have raised their family in Portage Park, sending their two children to public schools and supporting local businesses. As alderman, he has prioritized the revitalization of the local economy and bringing resources to the public schools in our neighborhoods. He is also a founding member of the Chicago Progressive Reform Caucus.

Former Alderman Arena placed a referendum on the ballot for an elected school board and spearheaded the Debt Transparency, Accountability and Performance (DTAP) ordinance in 2016, which was designed to create oversight and transparency for interest rate swaps and other variable rate financing interments. He also voted against Mayor Emanuel’s position on the Infrastructure Trust Fund, speed cameras, digital billboards and the food truck ordinance. His votes against city budgets were driven by a clear set of priorities based in funding for education, public safety, and fiscal responsibility.

Former Alderman Arena’s clear support of ethics reform, government transparency, and fiscal accountability set him apart as a strong, independent voice on the Chicago City Council. In 2017, it earned him the IVI-IPO Leon Despres Award.
