The Chicago Architecture Biennial opens today with quite a few contributions by German artists and architects. That a look at this work:
Parasite Parking is an artistic intervention that reclaims the once privatized parking space in Chicago by inhabiting and activating it 24/7. The artist Jakob Wirth and Alexander Sacharow work with the question of public access to space and use different artistic and spatial strategies to reclaim it and open up a process to think about new counter-hegemonic imaginations.
With Parasite Parking they want to decode and recode the so important and central urban space occupied by the steel relicts of modernity. The performative Intervention will start on the 1st of October and is part of 6018 North exhibition Raisin.

In the United States, Peter J. McGuire, a union leader who had founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1881, is generally given credit for the idea of Labor Day. In 1882 he suggested to the Central Labor Union of New York that there be a celebration honouring American workers.
Happy Labor Day!

This weekend:
Theatre Y creates a social ritual for Chicagoans re-emerging out of COVID-19 on behalf of eleven communities hit hard by the virus and systemic racism, an ambulatory performance along Chicago's Emerald Necklace with the goal of forging new bonds across neighborhoods. This six-week urban pilgrimage seeks to recover our shared humanity and reclaim the walkability that Daniel Burnam intended in some of Chicago's most underserved neighborhoods.

On Thursday, September 2nd at 6pm, contemporary author Matthias Goeritz, will be reading from a novel in progress called Die Sprache der Sonne (forthcoming from C.H. Beck in 2022), which tells the story of a contemporary Times correspondent in Istanbul and an elderly German man she interviews named Naumann, who was once a foreign correspondent in Turkey for a right-wing German newspaper. Naumann (somewhat unreliably) tells of his eventual disillusionment with the rise of fascism in his home country and in Turkey during the 1930s, and he talks endlessly about his obsession with the Sun Language Theory, a pseudoscientific and nationalist notion that all languages of the world derived from a proto-Turkic primal language. Weaving back and forth through time, Die Sprache der Sonne follows the search for truth in the instability of memory, history, and language.
