Sungjae Lee: Flags | Relay Freedom
https://youtu.be/5zS3kJaRrv0

I first learned the word "white supremacy" in 2015. For the past 6 years, I have experienced microaggressions on a daily basis, countless deaths of people of color, and protests about these topics. As a q***r Asian artist, who emigrated to the States to have more freedom in my life, I am still learning the true meaning of freedom in relation to current racial politics. The meaning of “white supremacy” has grown bigger since residing in the United States, becoming a reality for me. By deconstructing and reassembling the text printed on the American flag alongside the national anthem, I intend to show the flipside of the ordinary object, charged with big concepts like national identity and political belief.

Sungjae Lee (he/they) is a Seoul-born, Chicago-based artist who makes performance, installation, text, video, and sound. His work "Flags" is the 7th piece featured in our series Relay Freedom, where 9 SAIC alumni meditate on the topic of freedom. How do they relay freedom? Can it be passed to the next person like a baton? Can freedom be communal? Must it be individual?

Michael Winfield: As a q***r black artist, I show my perception of society through the manipulation of materials around me. We are all made of the same materials, and with that in mind, I believe my creations can bring folks to a common ground. I hope to inspire those who want to break the mold of societal norms and free themselves from oppression.

Hello, from Jan and Henrike!

Sadly, our internship will end in a few days. We had a wonderful time at the Goethe-Institut and met many fantastic people in and around Chicago. We also had the opportunity to assist with many interesting projects. We learned a lot!

Part of our internship were “German For Hire”-visits at different schools in the USA (virtually and in-person). We presented on German culture, schools, everyday life and food, and met a lot of wonderful students and teachers. Thank you to Lindbergh High School, Libertyville High School, Vernon Hills High School, Monroe High School, Washington High School, Brookfield Academy, Olathe High School, Rock Island High School and Arrowhead High School for inviting us into their classrooms!

My Own Dummy Sitting On My Own Knee by Máire Witt O'Neill | Relay Freedom

In an attempt to explore the difference between individual freedoms and communal freedom this work is a ‘collaboration’ with my grandfather who is deceased. But perhaps, in the end it is an exploration of artistic freedom versus the co-production of meaning OR maybe it is the difference between the rights of an individual versus the responsibilities one has to others OR perhaps it is about the myth of individual freedom and the necessity of communal freedom. Or maybe this is all just a lens from which I am looking at my grandfather’s writings.

This is the 5th piece presented as part of our weekly series Relay Freedom, where 9 SAIC alumni meditate on the topic of freedom.
How do they relay freedom? Can it be passed to the next person like a baton? Can freedom be communal? Must it be individual?

Final concert -- BRICOLAGE IV: TONY BUCK + DAMON LOCKS

Please note: the event will be streamed at 8pm CET (1pm CST) and at 8:30pm CST (3am CET) https://elasticarts.org/streaming/

Bricolage is a performance series that partners artists from the creative capitals of Berlin and Chicago in an exploration of collaborative work in the COVID era.
Co-curated by experimental musicians Magda Mayas and Dave Rempis, the series attempts to create new artistic partnerships, as well as new models for remote collaboration in this unprecedented time. Bricolage encourages artists to work creatively with the technological means available, and their limitations, to create new models that may have use and impact even after this era.

Bricolage will be produced and broadcast by venue partners in each city, Elastic Arts in Chicago, and ausland in Berlin.

As the 100th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Beuys nears its final days, we present an evening devoted to the question of Beuys and the universal—the “everyone” in Beuys’s famous and endlessly debated claim that “everyone is an artist.” The evening begins and ends with the world premiere of a new work, “Family,” for fixed media and speaker by University of Chicago composer/artist Andrew Stock, in between which will unfold a conversation between artist Theaster Gates (professor at the University of Chicago in the Department of Visual Arts and the College), Dieter Roelstraete (curator at the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society), and Mechtild Widrich (Associate Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at SAIC), moderated by Gray Center Director Seth Brodsky.

Premiere of Andrew Stock's piece Family & conversation w/ Theaster Gates, Dieter Roelstraete and Mechtild Widrich, moderated by Seth Brodsky
