Today we celebrate the Day of German Unity. The infamous Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989 marking the beginning of the reunification of East and West Germany. On October 03, 1990 Germany was offically reunited into one country after being seperated in 1945.#TagderDeutschenEinheit #BerlinWall #HistoryToday

What are the causes and consequences of thawing permafrost?
As the snow disappears earlier in the year, the darker ground absorbs more solar energy, the permafrost thaws and the surface turns into a swamp, from which large volumes of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon are released. Neurotoxins such as anthrax and methylmercury emerge from the mushy soil. Buildings lean, roads buckle, and slopes fail.
Moderated by Urs Obrist, climate and polar scientist Peter Lemke and ecologist Gabriela Schaepman-Strub explain the causes and consequences of this threatening situation for the environment. The two passionate researchers also explain if and what we can do about it.

Sal Moreno: Experiments in Free Drumming Intermission | Relay Freedom
Sal Moreno's "Experiments in Free Drumming Intermission" is the final piece we are presenting as part of our weekly series Relay Freedom.
By using motion-capture in live performances, Moreno is able to play and interact with visuals/sounds generated by the body in real-time, creating an exchange that further bridges the physical and the digital realms.
RELAY FREEDOM is a series of video works by nine SAIC alumni, curated by Mark Jeffrey. Since November 2021, every Friday a new artist presented their work. How do they relay freedom? Can it be passed to the next person like a baton? Can freedom be communal? Must it be individual?
While this was the last video feature for now, stay tuned! We will have one more exciting Relay Freedom event coming up soon!

Aram Atamian: In One of the Seven | Relay Freedom
In One of the Seven is a lost fragment of the 1940 film The House of the Seven Gables, starring horror matinee idol Vincent Price. Presented now for the first time ever since it was lost on the cutting room floor in 1939. Scholars believe this fragment was omitted through the Motion Picture Production Code for imagining the puritanical scaffolding of the United States burning down along with the titular house of the the film and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel of the same name.
Aram Atamian is the 8th artist to be featured in Relay Freedom. He is a US born diasporan Armenian artist and educator living and working in Chicago and Yerevan. His art practice spans live performance, installation and lens-based media.

Freedom - Transcend - Go beyond
"Transcend" by Michael Winfield is the 6th piece presented as part of Relay Freedom. 9 SAIC alumni meditate on the topic of freedom - How do they relay freedom? Can it be passed to the next person like a baton? Can freedom be communal? Must it be individual? Learn more at goethe.de/usa/relayfreedom
Michael Winfield: As a queer black artist, I show my perception of society through the manipulation of materials around me. We are all made of the same materials, and with that in mind, I believe my creations can bring folks to a common ground. I hope to inspire those who want to break the mold of societal norms and free themselves from oppression.

My Own Dummy Sitting On My Own Knee by Máire Witt O'Neill | Relay Freedom
In an attempt to explore the difference between individual freedoms and communal freedom this work is a ‘collaboration’ with my grandfather who is deceased. But perhaps, in the end it is an exploration of artistic freedom versus the co-production of meaning OR maybe it is the difference between the rights of an individual versus the responsibilities one has to others OR perhaps it is about the myth of individual freedom and the necessity of communal freedom. Or maybe this is all just a lens from which I am looking at my grandfather’s writings.
This is the 5th piece presented as part of our weekly series Relay Freedom, where 9 SAIC alumni meditate on the topic of freedom.
How do they relay freedom? Can it be passed to the next person like a baton? Can freedom be communal? Must it be individual?
