Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), a day where we remember and honor trans individuals whose lives have been lost to anti-trans violence both this year and over the years. Although huge strides have been made to strengthen and protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, systemic barriers to freedom and equality for trans people continue to threaten our communities. Legal Council is committed to continuing to use the power of the law to secure safety and well-being for trans people so they can survive and thrive as their true selves.

This two-year pilot project is aimed to help immigrant leaders in the suburbs spread awareness throughout their communities about their health care options despite their immigration status.

The project is spearheaded by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Arab American Family Services (AAFS), Legal Council for Health Justice, Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, Mujeres Latinas en Accion, Shriver Center on Poverty Law and Southwest Suburban Immigrant Project - SSIP.

Illinois Medicaid is the largest health insurer in the state, providing coverage to about 25 percent of the state’s residents, including people living with HIV, working families, older adults, people with disabilities, pregnant residents, and low-income kids and adults.

Since offers coverage to many of our clients, AFC joined Legal Council for Health Justice, EverThrive Illinois, and the Shriver Center on Poverty Law in speaking with community members on their experience in the program. From appointment availability and transportation needs to expand coverage that included more dental procedures and supplements required, read more about each community member’s experiences with Illinois Medicaid.

Huge thank you to the many orgs who have endorsed this bill and are helping us advocate for its passage: Access Living, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, Chicago Teachers Union, COFI, Defending the Early Years, Illinois AEYC, Illinois Federation of Teachers, Illinois Optometric Association, Legal Council for Health Justice, NASW-Illinois Chapter, Northern Illinois Nature Preschool Association, Northside Action For Justice, Parents 4 Teachers, POWER-PAC IL, IL Raise Your Hand, and Sierra Club Illinois.

Play is learning. Play is the right of every child. Play has the exact academic, social, physical benefits that our children need right now.

It has been removed from public schools over the last 30 years in an entirely misguided attempt to pursue the high scores on standardized tests of reading and math. It hasn't done that, and it's harmed the childhood educational experiences of many.

Let the children play!
