Today, May 25, is Trauma-Informed Awareness Day. Trauma and adversity early in life creates a body and brain more likely to be burdened by chronic illness, trouble learning, addiction, poor mental health and even reduced lifespan. The science tells us that the prevention of adversity and the fostering of individual and community support can build resilience that leads to better health. Client Focus: Samuel - Legal Council for Health Justice

While much has improved for people with HIV since the start of the epidemic, we still have work to do. Many who are HIV positive still face routine discrimination or violation to their privacy, like our client Samuel did. Read his story in our latest blog:

People with HIV still face stigma and potentially seismic fallout if their status is disclosed without their permission.

Thank you again to everyone who supported #BuildingLives21! Every dollar raised will ensure all of our communities can stay healthy, fed, and housed during and after this crisis. We hope you felt inspired by health justice stories from our clients and by powerful spoken word performances, including "Equality in Practice" by local artist Ugochi Nwaogwugwu.

Billy Porter Breaks a 14-Year Silence: “This Is What HIV-Positive Looks Like Now”

“There’s no more stigma — let’s be done with that. It’s time. I’ve been living it and being in the shame of it for long enough.”

Thank you Billy Porter for your words and guidance. It’s time to end the stigma around HIV. Like Billy said, it’s been long enough.

Billy Porter takes a long deep breath. “I have to start in 2007,” he says, having settled in across the table. He’s here, at Little Owl in the West Village, to get something off …

Education Usually Improves Health. But Racism Sabotages Benefits For Black Men

A new study shows that Black men who complete higher education do not reap the same benefits, such as higher income and longer life expectancy, as white people who do the same. Experts say these disparities stem from a "persistent devaluation of Black men in U.S. society."

For most people, more education leads to healthier and longer lives. Not so for Black men. Racism's power in harming their health may be more persistent than previously understood, researchers say.

Reversing Trump, US restores transgender health protections

LGBTQ people deserve the same safe and high-quality health care and services as everyone else. This reversal is a huge win for health justice. We must also recognize that while these protections come as a great relief for LGBTQ patients, LGBTQ people—and especially more recently, the trans community—still face continued attacks on their health and well-being daily. The fight for health justice must continue to protect LGBTQ health.

The Biden administration says the government will protect gay and transgender people against s*x discrimination in health care

Black Lives Are Shorter in Chicago. My Family’s History Shows Why.

One woman's family history explores the many state-sanctioned failures in housing, education, and economic and health policy that have led Chicago to have the country's widest racial gap in life expectancy.

How did a Promised Land to generations of Black families become a community of lost lives?

While the original language of House Bill 219 banned the use of prone (face down) restraint for all Illinois students, the House Floor Amendment 2 makes exceptions for certain students with Behavioral Intervention Teams. Legal Council OPPOSES HB 219, HFA 2 as long as it does not protect all students from this harmful practice.

Derek Chauvin Found Guilty Of George Floyd's Murder

While we are relieved that Derek Chauvin was found guilty, we are aware that the system which allowed him to murder George Floyd is equally guilty. We must continue to push for accountability for all state-sanctioned harm against Black Americans, and continue to interrogate and dismantle the systems in our country that have made safety, health, and dignity a privilege rather than a right. Racial justice is health justice.

George Floyd's death sparked sustained protests in Minneapolis, across the United States and around the world. It also set off a national reckoning on police violence and systemic racism.

Could someone tell me that is it legal if clinics refuse to see patients with cold symptoms (No fever, no cough) during this time and send them to ER and send ER bills? Thanks in advance!
We have a tale to tell. About a company that hides it well. They can tell a thousand lies. But they have destroyed many lives. So many of us have learned that lesson well. As we have endured United's discrimination very well.
